I could be wrong but I recall reading somewhere 'roots' are heavy carbs ie. sweet potato, potatoes, yam,...looks like got to consult with dr google or dr CBS :D

This is the most difficult part I think. And also in a social setting, cos we're not eating the stomach filling carbs, we eating bigger portions of the meat, it's perceived we're eating more than our share of the good (=expensive) stuff [:(]

Funny thing isn't it? People know innately that meat is "good" and "expensive". But somehow, most people choose fill themselves up with the cheap and bad stuff, and consider someone trying to eat well as socially selfish. The logic that it's expensive to eat well doesn't really gel with me cos to me, the potential consequences of eating "cheap" is a lot more expensive, financially, physiologically and emotionally.

So spending say 50% more on food is totally worth it to me. All things considered, I'd rather spend more on food than drive a nicer car.

My group of friends whom I eat often with have no such problems. We just order a tonne of good stuff, enough to go around.

Other than that, I try not to eat with people I know who do not subscribe to my lifestyle. If I do, I would be prepared and have something really filling to eat before I eat with them. That way, I eat very little and appear to be "normal" and even "considerate", haha.

I think nothing is really "bad" when put in the right context.

For example, is eating 1/2 a banana just before you go to sleep better than having 3 whole yams right after an intense anaerobic weight lifting session?

Or is eating 1/2 bowl of rice together with a chicken leg better than eating 1/2 a block of butter by itself?

To quote Dr Kurt Harris again: "Fine is not better. Tolerated is not optimal."

If something is stalling your weight loss progress, make some changes.

I think our approach here is eating in a way that maximises health in the most satiating and comfortable way, while enjoying the secondary effect of reaching an ideal body composition.

My first question to you would be what is your goal?

Are you very far off your ideal weight or are you pretty near? Are you insulin resistant? How about exercise?

One of the best and most accurate ways to know if your food is spiking your blood sugar is to measure it every meal. This way you can nail down the exact culprits.

i just want to get down to below 70. maybe 68. now at 72++

bmi is not a good measure of ideal weight.. but if i can run 2.4 without feeling like i'm trying too hard, that will be best.

reducing weight helps with the timing and stress on the joints.

a good 10 kg less than i normally weigh first, 68. i'll decide if i want to lose more later.. 4kg more to go.. hahahaha

I think if we eat optimally, it's not up to us to decide. We can't lose more than our "optimal fat marker", or the optimal amount of fat in our body. Maybe for a short while, like a body building contest, yes, but sustainably, no.

Nobody can be without body fat lah...will die from cold and lack of lubrication...imagine how painful it is to sit down on a hard bench LOL

Well, I'd say you're not very far off from your goal then.

An average height asian guy at 72kg isn't what every one would call "fat" in the first place. So I think your starting point is already a lot better than most people who actually WANT to lose weight.

As you might already know, the nearer you are to the body composition that your body naturally wants to be at, the slower fat loss will be. Patience and perseverance would be the key now.

If you have an exercise routine, what is it like?

Skunk made a very good point. To me, anything below 12% bodyfat would be pretty hard to maintain if you want to eat to satiety and feel comfortable all the time.

i'm 173cm tall. i used to weigh 62kg in my teens. in NS was 65kg. that was like 12% body fat according to the doctor during my physical. so lowest i will go is 65kg. 68kg is just where i was after NS.

i went up to 80kg before. 36 inch waist. staying just below 70kg is my long term weight plan if i don't intend to bulk up on muscles. its hard to keep the muscles if there is no regime to keep training.

i have cut back on exercise now after the ippt. i am focussing on bicep curls with 5kg dumb bells, about 10 to 20 reps of 20 if i am in the mood. some other stuff, push ups sit ups.. if i can get out of the house maybe pull ups and dips but not much. i cut my runs to 2 times a week now, maybe once. i'm getting lazy.. going back to my lazy ass self.

in all these time that i gained weight, i have eaten high carbs. meat, fat, coconut, don't eat much. refined carbs, sugar, potatoes, the SAD, that's what I ate.

i miss my junk food.. [laugh]

Interesting.

I am exactly the same height as you (173cm) and I weigh about 64kg now, and increasing as my muscles grow. Waist line is pretty steady at 29 inches.

Looking at our approaches, the differences are:

1) I eat a lot more fat and almost zero fruit

2) I fast for 24 hours twice a week

3) I exercise really intensely (as hard as I can, almost 100% effort, out of breath even 15 mins after I finish type) for short periods of less than 1/2 hour at least 5 times a week.

As a comparison, if I ever go to the gym (very very seldom), I do something like 6 sets of 25kg dumbell incline bench press (8-10 reps) > 18kg bicep curls (8-10 reps) > 10 burpees with pushups > 16kg standing dumbell military shoulder presses (8-10 reps) > 2 min plank, no rest between exercises.

When I work out at the park (which is almost everyday), I will do something like 6-8 sets of 12 pullups > 60 incline pushups > 60 mountain climbers > 15 dips > 60 jumping jacks, no rest between exercises.

So I guess you could say we are at different fitness levels.

I miss my nonya kueh too...

bro CBS, lets say if we cheat, do we go all out in a day? Eat wat ever comes to our mind, since insulin gonna spike, let it spike juz for 1 day [;)]

I do it for 1 meal. The reason is because I feel physically terrible if I eat a whole day's worth of junk. My energy levels go down, I feel irritable, I start having stomach upset problems, and I keep getting hungry.

The worst part is, the day after, the desire to want to eat sugar again is overwhelmingly strong. I can imagine myself eventually going back to my old ways if I allow myself to just eat as much sugar as I want for a whole day on a regular basis. So I never plan my cheat meals. Can be once fortnightly, or once a month. I will eat when I feel something is worth it to me.

But that's just me. Maybe you're stronger than me.

Me thoughts only:

It's easier to get back on track if you just 'cheated' one meal or dish or a (previous) favourite dessert for example. A moment of weakness is easy to succumb to, but easier to also correct immediately. I think after 1 day's full of carbs or your favourite foods, your determination and resolve will waver. Or you may have a situtation where something unexpected come up and you're not able go back next day to your paleo/primal/low carb, then it's doubly hard for your body to get back 'in tune'.

So my opinion is, if you really want it to work and are serious about this, don't plan a cheat meal (fixed day of the week or a schedule ahead one) much less a full day of 'cheat' meals. [:p] But of course end of the day, it's you and your objectives and your life :D

I notice my greatest weight-loss is always after i've stuffed my face to the max. Yesterday was horrendous...ate until going to burst, drank 6 shots of vodka somemore.....this morning i dropped 300 grams lol

I wonder whether there's a scientific reason why....maybe increased calories boost metabolic rate, which burns more fat?

must be all the carbs they eat.

Also, there's evidence to suggest that too much cardio will damage the arteries. Weight-training is better and more natural. Humans were never made to run 42 km....in fact, archaeological evidence suggests they're ambush/trap hunters, setting traps to snare the animal, then kill them with spears, seldom pursuing prey by running (heck, we can't even out-run a rabbit lol).
