To add, you can change your stock 4-1 extractor to an aftermarket 4-1 extractor. Should help with the straight-thru exhaust. That's what I'm on. Cheers.

But 4-1 lag on pickup and mid lei. I'd rather stick to 4-2-1. But stil up to individual la.

Hi guys

My current ride is an 09 altis. I am currently finding it underpowered.

For the first 3 gears are ok as they are rather responsive but it is the 4th it is sluggish unless i turn off the a/c.

What are the improvements that i can do to improve the performance of my altis?

thanks in advance!

Hey pal, I'm sorry i'm not trying to be rude but an Altis will always be an Altis... Why dun you save up all these spare cash and buy a car with better performance?

I used to drive one and speaking from experience, I wasted alot of money on my Altis... Changing your exhaust, header and decat will give you a nice bassy sound no doubt, but ultimately,

the sluggishness will NOT go away... I even TC my Altis at some point... but the engine is not built for such stress and it nearly gave way... so I lan lan gotta dekit the turbo and sold it off at a fraction of the price I paid for it.

IMO, you can install the ADM air charger (if ther're still there in bukit batok)... that's a mod that allows you to feel a little difference at least (of course you feel more diff with a turbo... but its not worth the money and hassle).

change your crank pulley too, it gives you a slight better feel too...

If you want any advise on Altis, let me know, I give you the contact of this guy who has many parts for Altis, from projector lamps and taillamps to performance parts...

But again, don't waste your money. a family car is meant for places like the zoo, birdpark, grocery shopping, etc not tracks.....

we need to ask TS what kind of performance he wants..

if he expects a Nissan GTR performance (just to exaggerate), no matter how you tune and mod an altis, even if reach CTR standard, TS also will be not satisfied.

if want a performance car, TS should have gotten other car make. don't waste time and money on a family sedan.

Used to frequent vogs until their website was down, then joined MCF and never looked back since I no longer drive a Vios...

Owned a pre-fl vios then and was quite happy with the performance gains from just some simple bolt-on mods. Nothing too extreme like TC or SC or NOS!

To TS, what some of the broz here have suggested (e.g. light mods like intake/exhaust + ECU) will be good enough already! Personally, I'd suggest 4-2-1 extractor 'cos it helps overcome the losses in low-end power from your open-pod air intake modification.

i still miss ur ride [laugh] waiting for chance to try again [:p]

For FOC power, simply remove everything that is not needed in your car.

1) your spare tyre

2) replace the thick car mat with old new paper,

3) remove all soft toy and papers and other garbage in the boot,

4) remove any ICE component in the car (amplifier, aftermarket speaker),

5) maintain max 1/4 tank of fuel at all time,

6) maintain max 1/2 tank of wiper fluid.

u can easily reduce 50kg to 80kg and the improvement over such weight for an typical 1.5L to 1.6L saloon could be tremendious....

Wow.... Can also remove rear seats and all interior fittings and sound proofing. Make it just like a race car. confirm super light! hehe....

thats abit too much for a family sedan.

the purpose of having a family sedan most probably is for the space and ability to ferry people around + carry certain amount of stuffs.

thats what some of the Vios members did when go PG... usually, weight reduction on small cc car will make a bigger diff compare to larger cc car... for i... for instance, with my wife (45 to 47kg), i need quite some time to hit 160km/h at NSHW, without her, i can reach the same speed much faster.... however, if i were to drive my company musso, i dun think i can feel any diff with or without her cause the her weight is totally negligable compare to the overall car weight.

Hi Ice

I am not looking forward to outrun a GTR on a straight... even though i would like to. [laugh]

but seriously at 107hp, it is really bad in overtaking with 4 normal adults which is the pet peeve....

There are times when even 2 adults seem like a problem...

the prob i think is with the long gears at 4th OD... can shortern but dunno if can do in spore...anyway i dun think i wanna shorthern it so option is to add more horsies... :D

And the 4th itself cant churn out much, switching to 3 waste petrol..noise and still cant pik up...

so is there a better options other than drive slower, allow cars to go past first etc.? :D

It simply due to poor pwr to weight ratio. It has nothing to do with gearing. I have been thru that stage but not with an Altis. If u urgently need the pwr, switch off air cond & slam throttle. Sure got pwr.

The best thing u could do is sell 1.6L & buy 1.8L or wait 2L. I M SERIOUS!!

U need to ram throttle for VVTi engine. Otherwise, laggy + high FC. Try driving around with OD switched off (i.e. max 3rd gear only), there won't be much diff in FC. In fact, it's more FC efficient if you use 3rd gear to climb flyovers than 4th gear. Try changing gear at 3K or more (even on first and second gear).

Your FC will suck big time if you drive too slowly (below 60km/hr) in City stop/start conditions.

This is the hallmark for DVVT, VVT, VVTi.............................................

The engine only start to come alive after 3K rpm, becomes placid quickly after 4.5K rpm.

but 4th gear... haiz....

Anyway thanks guys for yoru advice!

Don't need to mod one lah. Don't waste your $$$. You need to understand the characteristics of your engine. Most modern engines are VVT and tuned for low emissions at idling and low engine speed to meet mandatory EU requirements.

If you change gear at 2.5K rpm, then confirm cum chop super no power no torque. Just whack to >3K and it will bring smiles to you again. :D

The only mod probably will be strut bars to stiffen your coke can chassis. This is worthwhile.

In order to improve your car performance is to do engine overhaul and fuel injection cleaning.Check fuel pump operating pressure and volume. Test pressure regulator for operation and leakage. Flush entire fuel rail and upper fuel injector screens to include pressure regulator. Clean fuel injectors. Decarbon engine assembly. Clean throttle plate and idle air control (IAC) passages. Check minimum air flow rate and adjust if needed. Relearn onboard computer.

4th gear is not meant for overtaking, unless you're driving some uber torquey amg merc or hamann volcano.

Usually 3rd gear is sufficient for overtaking even at highway speeds. With 4 adults in a simple 1.6 litre car, you're going to have to floor it to make decent pace. If the speeds are not too high, downshift to 2nd gear. I guess you can press that gimmicky ECT switch in the 1.6 litre altis if you want the transmission to be held in 3rd gear longer for better overtaking...
