Is a load test for the piles driven into the soil.

 

at the centre bottom of that stack is a hydraulic jacking device mounted on top of a pile and readings taken of the devices to measure settlement of the pile in order to determine the datas needed to strengthent the foundations.

noticed a few floating barges at Marina Bay Sands site

 

where are the barges going to after works are completed given that the singapore river is sealed off at marina barrage??

 

are they going to:

 

1.) just destroy them and sell for scrap? (most likely but what a waste)

2.) break them into pieces and transport on dry land and assemble back again (is that even possible?)

3.) use super crane to hoist over the barrage (unlikely, too costly)

4.) convert to tourist boat and fetch tourist around the bay area.

sounds logical...but before the even bring the cubes into the site.....i have seen them drilled and take soil samples. i guess they would already know abt the soil conditions before the actual design stage....anyway i also guessing

 

soil testing will definately need t be done for any site..because no point for piling if it's marine clay at the bottom..need to know for sure the soil condition can be compacted and take the design load.

But for bored piling, I've seen them drilling a hole into the ground and pouring concrete in after putting in those reinforcement bars.

Actually, purpose of having piles, whether steel or bored piles, is not to strengthen the soil. Piles are used to transfer the load from the building deep down into the hard soil layer, thereby ensuring the building do not settle excessively.

 

The hard soil layer is the original ground millions of years ago and through the years, foreign soil are deposited onto this original soil. By this current time, the original soil is more than 40 metres below the ground level. The piles therefore could be as long as 70 metres.
