Billyone Neutral Newbie May 23, 2010 Share May 23, 2010 i dont blame you for starting this thread when you attend financial seminars and even the guy from housingloan.sg keeps telling people that 5-7% return per year is standard they are taking c o c k they themselves cannot achieve this consistently hence we ourselves built up expectation when we look into our own needs for good returns however they forget to tell you there is high risk involve that may result you loosing your pants too
Billyone Neutral Newbie May 23, 2010 Share May 23, 2010 be a fund manager there is usually an upfront 2% for the small investor to pay when buying a fund in addition, the fund manager takes away 20% if there is profit made that is after excluding all the soft and hard dollars they already earn
Razgriz Clutched May 23, 2010 Share May 23, 2010 but not to this extend i believe ST is jus trying to give example.. but personnally curious to know too how to make money grow i heard things like shares, and forex ar~ unit trust etc.. but where to start? any pros around to give insight view? Genie47 1st Gear May 23, 2010 Share May 23, 2010 You start small. You start by saving your money first. Then you start to look into investment costs. Every time you invests, it will cost you money so you watch those cost. When you start watching costs, you will know that unit trusts or mutual funds as they are also called are damn expensive. Billyone already said being a fund manager can earn loads money. So you deny the fund manager this. Then you start looking into stocks and shares. This comes with risk. Since you are into making money grow, then you start looking into fundamentals. So you start putting money into "safe" companies. The "safe" is put there because like LT Nate Fick says in Generation Kill and his book One Bullet Away, "Safety is relative." Bonds? Move on. You can't afford it in SG unless you put money into bond funds. Bond funds? Aren't they managed by fund managers? Yes. See above what you should do. After all this is said, investing your money doesn't make anyone rich. Working hard and keeping your life costs low which includes your investment costs is what you should aim for. If you are frugal, get by with little, you should have enough later.

Maldini03 1st Gear May 23, 2010 Share May 23, 2010 Many are skeptical on investing, as some mention, that fund managers make a lot of money and we should deprive them by not investing imo is not the correct way to go. How about taking a sime dollar cost averaging plan. Rather effective if yr objective is the long term plan.

If you are not interested in managing your own money, then I believe you should not have any problems sending the fund manager's kids to Havard too. As for bond funds thanks to bonds being very over anyone's means in SG, I think preference shares can be used but these come about once in awhile. So a cost conscious investor should dive into bond funds with the lowest expenses.

They have the greatest risk and they will abandon you if you use them as your personal pension fund in the future.

Toto/4D, football dont count as investment open an accounts with a bank and with less than $500 at the end of the month, they already charge you $2/- per month you want a higher return investment, then it is like a full time job, no time to monitor better put in the bank, cos even if buying Toto but no time to check, 1st prize also forget to claim
Genie47 1st Gear May 23, 2010 Share May 23, 2010 Dream. To make 20% on your investment, they have to make even more to pay themselves. So all that pay to them will cost you. On another note it is very difficult to beat the market consistently. In fact, it will be cheaper if Ah Meng picks the stocks for you. (Bless her in orang utan heaven). Imagine one year happy happy 20%, the next year -15% and so forth. They still take the same cut. Does that sound good to you? As I have said, investing will not make you rich. If you are looking to get rich, I suggest you go be an entrepreneur and work hard at it. If you succeed, you will get rich. ↡ Advertisement
