Well, 60m for an old man is quite long. I guess that he lives at those landed ppty just directly opposite. So using the traffic crossing is longer by 60m x 2 times.

what's a little distance compared to your life in exchange? tsk tsk.. -_-

this one must ask old folks. only they can tell you.

but we will not fully appreciate it until we reach their age. bad joints, pain in hips, knees, no strength, etc etc.

When i travel on that road, I keep to 60km/hr so that i can react immediately if i see jaywalkers which is quite a familiar sight.

We (the lexus, forester and me) was at 60km/h too, perhaps + or - another 6-7km/h, and it was still a darn close call. Bright day light some more. Imagine if it was night. I'd probably think that a "good brother" got early release for chinese 7th month due to good behaviour! [laugh] And the old man may end up reporting for 7th month early instead.

Oh well, i agree its not right to expect the old folks to think, weigh, move, act like us. So i just wish him the best of luck. Whether +120m, or 2.5m by 1.2m, the choice is his, and his family's. I've done what i can to raise awareness.

Hahaha! Yah, think the ah pek's timing is pretty damn zun!! Cool as a cucumber lah that guy!

But seriously, it's a dangerous area and I've had a pretty bad accident there before due to some cab cutting out suddenly causing a line of cars to jam brake! Too bad I was fiddling with my stereo at the time and saw the hazard too late [bigcry] Learnt my (expensive) lesson after that and always drive slow there nowadays.

Just so you know - the law has a scale of shared responsibility if you hit someone like Mr Cool Ah Pek.

Leftmost lane - pedestrian is mostly at fault.

Rightmost lane - driver is is mostly at fault.

In your case, if you hit him after he has managed to cross 2 lanes safely, the inference is that a reasonable driver had a long enough time to see and avoid him (slow down, change lane, whatever). If you still manage to hit him, you must have not been keeping a proper lookout.

Legal translation - almost 100% your fault.

It's not for you to teach him a lesson and run him over.

Thanks for your enlightening post. While the ascending degree of responsibility against the driver on the outer lanes kinda make sense, i'm sure the law will also take cognisance of circumstances when making judgement.

In this instance, I did manage to observe him from a distance as i was hanging back from the 2 vehs on the middle lane. Imagine i was abreast of the forester, and my view thus blocked by the lexus. I doubt I would have noticed the cool ah pek still persisting in crossing the road despite oncoming traffic, and might not have braked in time to avoid him coming into my path. That's why i think having an in-veh recorder is important to capture the facts rather than leaving it to investigators and judges who were not even at the scene to witness the incident. With one party's family/friends baying for blood and compensation, it's likely that the judgement will tilt towards the party that suffer the loss of a life.

Just as the inference is for a reasonable driver to maintain awareness to avoid pedestrains, the converse must also be true. That a reasonable pedestrian will not have a death wish to walk right across the road when vehicles are bearing down. Just my opinion.
