Engine Pinging

I don't recommend changing of plugs just for the sake of it. Instead, should first inspect the plugs for problems. Plug condition will tell you a great deal of information about your engine and why its pinging.

If the plugs you use are too hot, then you need a colder plug. Changing back to the same heat range is not going to solve your pinging problem.

Sometimes your timing may be too advance and you can tell from the grounding electrode if your timing is OK or not.

Then sometimes, you may be running too lean. Again, the plugs (esp. the porcelean area below the center tip) will tell you the answer.

Sometimes, deposits can also cause pinging. Cause some deposits on the plug will adsorb the heat and get so hot that it ignites the fuel.

Thus, there are numerous conditions that can cause engine to ping. I personally do not think Latio needs 98 petrol to run unless the ECU has been reprogrammed. There has to be something causing the problem.

Ya i too thinking his ECU has some settings not normal. Thats why i did suggest a soft reset 1st.

Seems strange he n another person posted their Latio needs 98 ron?

Ok... you've heard the plugs possibility, fuel filter ,etc..... let me scare you with a more expensive possibility.... your MAF sensor is screwed. Maybe dirty lah..... so gives wrong reading and mess up the AFR. Have that cleaned and see if it helps.

Ya that also can. Cause engine to run lean.

Original plugs for Latio is Denso FXE20HE11 but now TCM uses NGK LZKAR7AP-11 and I have pinging even on RON95.

Previously no such problem with the DENSO.

Then u just might hv found e answer.

Switch back to Denso n see how. Maybe TC only hv NGK n e plug ty use is not suitable but ty just try try n hope fr e best.

Not necessary though. It depends alot on the RPM. AT high RPM it sounds very different, nothing like a clack clack. Its more like a high pitch noise due to frequency of the knock.

Its not easily detectable by human ears one. One severe knocks can be heard. there are specialised knock sensitive micrphones and earphones so the tuner can detect knock while tuning.

Most of the time, light knocks are not detectable.

Ya but easiest to detect pinging at low speeds with window open. Thats why i ask him to try that way.

High speed pinging u sometimes feel car jerk n hesitate but some pple might not even notice it. hahaha.

Im surprised TC checked n found everything in good order. I wonder how effective is their checking?

A quick question, folks.

I just changed an alternator and the alternator belt recently.

I could hear slightly louder noise (although not really to the point of irritating) around the pulley/bearing area after the belt change.

Is this common for a new belt? Any remedies? Do you folks spray anything (e.g. WD-40) on the belt or the bearing/pulley to reduce the noise?

You mean chirping sounds? Or what kinda sounds?

New belts tend to stretch abit over the 1st few days or weeks. Then you'll get some chirping or squeak sounds on startup.... or in more severe cases if the former is not fixed.... even when the car is running.

It just needs re-tightening..... that's what happened to me for the last 2 times I had my belts changed.

Not really chirping sound.

The noise is low-pitched and sounds more like continuously rolling a Milo tin can on the floor. The sound is not loud though.

It is somewhere near the pulley/bearing area.

Update again.

I used up 1 tank of caltex ron95 together with MMO added. Yesterday I topped up with ron95 again. Seems like the pinging is gone! After whole day of driving, I didn't detect anymore pinging. Maybe the residual MMO in the tank is still having an effect. I'll complete the whole bottle of MMO and see what happens.

What u say sounds like e bearing worn. Maybe ty install e belt too tight n it damaged e bearing?

U sud not spray wd 40 on e belt or bearing. Belt is new so sud not slip n e bearing is sealed so if its gone u need to change it.

What is e MMO supposed to do. Remove carbon? Then if it solved yr problem it prob means u hv too much carbon build-up.

Try to find e reason why u hv so much carbon. Is yr plug e correct heat range or yr air/fuel mix wrong.

Something seems not right.

The bearings in the alternator were worn, changed to a re-con alternator and problem was solved (few months ago).

Ya alternator worn no need to buy a new 1 cos its damm ex.

Just get a re-con cos ty just change the bearing n carbon brushes n its good as new...............provided ty did a good job on the re-con.
