Update

 

After changing engine oil and doing an engine flush at Tan Chong Motors yesterday, I went to top up Caltex Ron95 again.

 

End up the knocking sound is even louder.

 

Sian. Don't know what to do next

 

 

 

Try to reset yr ECU and/or pump only 98ron.

 

Did u tell TC u hv problem abt yr engine knocking? What ty do?

Yup, engine refresh is engine flushing. Tan Chong always give ECU readout when servicing. Everything is "OK". But of course... everything to AD is ok one.

Last tank I used Caltex 98. No sound also. But sian, cos Latio supposed to be able to use RON92. Don't know why like that.

 

Were u mainly pumping 98 petrol n revving hard? Yr ECU cud hv advanced yr timing n when go back to 95 e spark is too advanced.

 

Normally it takes a few days fr ECU to re-learn ignition setting fr lower ron petrol.Unless u do a soft reset.

Like I said, Latio's spark plug is difficult to access. Seems like must take out manifold before they can access.

 

So I'm hoping to see if there are easier ways to solve the problem. :)

Although it's difficult to access, I think using a set of colder plugs may help reduce your pinging problem.

Bro, is Tan Chong using the original Denso spark plugs?

Went over to Ubi branch last week and they used NGK ones instead.

 

 

As far as i know, Toyota oem is Denso.

 

Nissan is NGK.

im mostly on caltex 95.. still not sure what pinging sounds like..

am used to the noise... from engine and tyres..

 

but the noise doesnt sound irregular to me...

 

 

Pinging or knocking sounds like someone using a hammer to whack yr engine. Sound like ''clack clack clack clack''.

 

Usually at low speed, usually in wrong gear like 3rd n u press accelerator all e way n e engine straining to pick up speed u wil hear it.

 

Open yr window n switch off radio to hear clearly.

 

Easier if u inside multi-storey carpark. Then e sound very loud.

If he doesn't have a choice, carbon build-up is the lesser evil than pinging.

I don't recommend changing of plugs just for the sake of it. Instead, should first inspect the plugs for problems. Plug condition will tell you a great deal of information about your engine and why its pinging.

 

If the plugs you use are too hot, then you need a colder plug. Changing back to the same heat range is not going to solve your pinging problem.

 

Sometimes your timing may be too advance and you can tell from the grounding electrode if your timing is OK or not.

 

Then sometimes, you may be running too lean. Again, the plugs (esp. the porcelean area below the center tip) will tell you the answer.

 

Sometimes, deposits can also cause pinging. Cause some deposits on the plug will adsorb the heat and get so hot that it ignites the fuel.

 

Thus, there are numerous conditions that can cause engine to ping. I personally do not think Latio needs 98 petrol to run unless the ECU has been reprogrammed. There has to be something causing the problem.

Ok... you've heard the plugs possibility,fuel filter ,etc..... let me scare you with a more expensive possibility.... your MAF sensor is screwed. Maybe dirty lah..... so gives wrong reading and mess up the AFR. Have that cleaned and see if it helps.

As far as i know, Toyota oem is Denso.

Original plugs for Latio is Denso FXE20HE11 but now TCM uses NGK LZKAR7AP-11 and I have pinging even on RON95.

Previously no such problem with the DENSO.

Not necessary though. It depends alot on the RPM. AT high RPM it sounds very different, nothing like a clack clack. Its more like a high pitch noise due to frequency of the knock.

 

Its not easily detectable by human ears one. One severe knocks can be heard. there are specialised knock sensitive micrphones and earphones so the tuner can detect knock while tuning.

 

Most of the time, light knocks are not detectable.

Month back I hv switch from M1 to OWS (3+1) and OWS iridium spark plug. The power was better but not sure whether is it bcos oil and plug is fresh.

I pulled out the MAF earlier. Doesn't look too dirty. So I guess can eliminate MAF problem?

U think its due to his engine running too hot? Why sud it run so hot? He sud find e cause then, unless he installed e wrong heat-range plug.
