When i graduated, i also had study loans to pay off. And hdb flat cov was not very low either. I remember opting for resale, still, paying around 35k in cov. No car for the first few years. Get married and settled first. Many sacrifices.

 

It is possible to do all that, with savings from first 2-3 years of working and with wife-to-be chipping in. All I can see now is that the youth are complaining this and that expensive, because they did not build up their savings. Spend a lot on entertainment, clothes, gadgets, clubbing, and now blame other that things are expensive??

 

I addressed the 'low cash' problem by working part-time after a-levels, giving tuition during undergrad years - all to build up savings with a view of paying off study loans. Definitely no spare cash for iPhone, etc. (not invented yet, anyway), no mobile phone bill - only pager, no clubbing, no fancy clothes or grooming stuff.

 

I would say that the expenses to start a family did not change much; except that the 'strawberry' generation these days are just waiting for things to happen to them, instead of taking positive action. They should ask themselves: how come these FTs, with their lower currency value, and a handicap of being a newcomer with no established roots and no advantage, can afford to build up their lives in singapore? Strange, right?

 

Life wasn't easier when we graduated 20 odd years ago. We had to save, give tuition to get through studies, put off buying a car etc. When I finally got a car on my own with full payment from savings, I opted for a 2nd hand Hyundai Excel and kept it for a long while.

 

That's how we get by.

 

Hearing from the younger generation, they seem to expect everything to be made available for them easily.

 

They better think: If they cannot compete with FTs on our homeground, how can we as Singapore compete with FTs boosting the economy oif their homelands that are rich in size and resources in the global economy? Better to get FTs working in Singapore to sustain our edge in the global economy, than for Singapore to become irrelevant economically.

Bro, you are talking about a car which is not a necessity. The pappys really hit below the belt this time with the high HDB prices. Humans have 3 basic needs - food, shelter, water. Deprive a person of any of those and people will react. The high HDB prices is tantamount to depriving people, especially the younger ones, of a proper shelter. I feel very DL when most of my SG friends who have gone for balloting for >6 times and still can't get a flat, and yet some others who are new citizens or NC+PR getting places like Dawson on their first try. WTF is going on in this blardy country.

Without influx of expertise, we can never kickstart an industry, be it bio science, robotics, chemical etc. What is important is after kickstarting an industry, we generate our human resource for it from our Institutes of Higher Learning. If it works out, Singaporeans will be able to graduate to join a more vibrant economy.

 

This is very different from your example, where the aboriginals did not keep up through education.

 

We used this tactic before in a different way. In the 70's, when the economy was driven by manufacturing, SIngapore sought foreign investments to kickstart the manufacturing industries, and we trained our workforce for it.

 

Now, the economy is boosted by the knowledge economy, be it R&D, finance etc. The way to attract foreign investments is to have expertise and infrastructure, as well as stability and security. FT is just one facet of the strategy to make Singapore attractive, that's all.

 

Without either, I don't see how we can remain relevant.

You have a point too, in fact, but this phenomenon is not restricted to singapore only. Blame it on greedy corporations.

 

I just read recently that wages for the average in the USA (viewed as an ideal by many) have been fairly flat since the 1970s!!! At the same time, the only group that greatly benefited from the economic growth and enjoyed income and salary increases by leaps and bounds were the top 10% of wage earners.

 

But you must also consider that the same guy who complain about property price increase will also benefit from it, once he started buying his own property. I'm one of them

 

A property price downturn, would hurt many more people than it would benefit.

I don't forsee this question disappearing even if every single FT is chased out and flat prices drop. Afterall, this issue had already been around for ages. I remember doing an essay on it in secondary school and that was 1993 LOL

I have friends who have no problems getting a flat. Is it because they insist on balloting for a desired hotly contested region? The number of flats available is supposed to be more than enough to meet the demand islandwide. Unless HDB is lying about the statistics?
