really? why? yours is phat or slim one? you put standing or lying down?

I do it because I think everytime during a cold start (power up) the disc reader spins to read for disc (in case there is) then when detecting the disc it continues spinning thus expanding more power and creating undue stress and heat during boot up.

Also had the unfortunate experience of having YLOD once and the disc got stuck inside and could not be removed, during the repair process I was recommended to remove the disc whenever I am doing a shutdown.

Also when you shut down you should use the PS button and hold to shutdown instead of just powering off, as it may corrupt files especially when it affects system files and when you are in the midst of a save game.

Mine is the Slim, and it lies flat.

i see. so do you have a cooling system for your ps3?

actually, for powering down the ps3, the way you mentioned is the correct way. i didn't know anyone would just switch it off thru the back. anyway, the slim ps3 has no switch.

My lich friends just turn off the switch at the rear (Phat) and now they just shut off the mains.... [laugh]

BTW, there is a forum which a freelance PS3 repairer in Malaysia replied to, interestingly he claims most dead lens PS3 users leave their discs inside when shutting down.
