so in conclusion, inline-5 or inline-6 is better? =x

6 lah.... [:p] But the 5 cylinder is a gem at high rev too. I remember fondly of VW Bora VR5... nice drive. But this engine is diff from IL5, it is derive from the VR6 engine.

Also the new TT RS is base on the old VR5 and re-engineered.

Inline 6 still the best, virtually vibration free while V6 can still feel the vibration at idle.

Only BMW got good in line 6 engine, all the other Mfg have gone to V6 route, but Lexus V6 very good, cannot feels the vibration, while my 370z,is not that good.

IL6 expensive to make and big. But I was quite surprise that BMW is able to squeeze it inside the 1series and Z4. But the TT RS is doing great job on a single lap run, out running even the 1 series M. Impressive... but somehow it is not recieving a fair share of comment from the motoring critic esp in UK... they probably still thinking the TT as a hairdresser car with more muscles.

ford focus rs 2.5litre turbo charged 5 cylinder engine.

Ford did not develop that engine. They sourced it from Volvo since previously they had a stake in the company before they sold it. IIRC the manual gearbox from the ST/RS is also from Volvo.

Since it's a 5 cylinder the crankshaft is inherently not balanced, that's why they produce a "rougher" sound and is less smooth dan an in-line 4 or 6. It also have problems at high revs hence most in-line 5 are TC so that it can deliver the max torque at low revs.

Some say the in-line 5 has the best compromise between the in-line 4 & inline 6 in terms of power & FC but it's also expensive to produce due to its unique design.

do you mean 5-speed manual gearbox? [laugh][:p]

just to add,

AE86 SOHC is using 8-valve and DOHC is using 16-value.

Both are using Inline-4 engine. Haha.

there is a 20 valve version of the 4AGE though.

the new audi RS3 will be using in-line 5 as well.

provided it is rear wheel bias with electronic differentials.... also shorter front overhang. Oh well.. in the end it is still an over engineered Golf.

BTW the RS3 will run a staggered front wheel set up.... :o so it is not rear wheel biased.

Actually Audi strategy of creating multiple product extension is reaping huge profit from buyers. RS3, RS4, RS5 and RS6. S3, S4, S5, S6, S8 from std models. All this could be done by sharing platforms and bin parts. In fact, they also created line extension like A5 and A5 sportsback and sell it as a premium A4. Impressive marketing organisation... ea of these models rakes in a differentiated premiums of 30%- 50% from base model to the top of the line RS models.

I personally get confuesed with all the models.....

confused is the word. just like Creative Technology, came up with so many MP3 models in the past. end up, non is successful. just confussing the consumers......

hope Audi don't end up this way. ha.....

too many models with little differentiation.
