Filtering Fast

Had a little debate about driving last night, and I'm wondering what people's opinions are.

 

Lets say you are driving and are passing a slower moving vehicle and are planning on filtering into his or her lane. When you pass the vehicle, you signal, check etc, and it is all clear, the other vehicle does not speed up, etc, this you move into his/her lane very quickly.

 

Think of the movement as quick cutting someone off abruptly, BUT there is more than ample space, the other driver does not need to slow down, etc.

 

Do you consider this to be rude?

had this rather nasty encounter just few days ago filtering into an expressway. i speed up, he speed up, and then i slow down, he slow down, and before i knew it, i came to the end of the filter lane and he was still beside me! call it bad timing by both of us maybe, but i had to jam break by now. however, he tap at his honk, so thinkg he wanna let me pass, i speed up to enter. he overtook me eventually and gave me the finger. he's a cabbie btw. ahaha.. thinking back now, just bad driving by both of us.. :P

 

however, for small filter lane shdnt hv such problem as ppl usually come to almost a stop to access the situation before turning out? and as for filtering into an expressway, it is smtimes all depending on timing and whether either party wanna give way or not..

always filter gradually. sometimes, you might think it's all clear. even with checking the mirrors, rear mirrors, turning the head to check etc.

 

and then, there's always a bike or car or lorry at the blind spot. if one had filtered fast, the result would have been an accident, sideswipe.

 

if the filtering is done slowly and gradually, it might have been a loud horn, hard braking, a lot of cursing n swearing. but no contact.

scenario was on the premise that all was good, as a theoretical exercise. of course in real life, a bit different in dynamic. on the str8? narrow? curving?

 

slow filtering who says will not have contact? you fancy a wager? even when you are stationery someone can come along and bang you...

just like ysterday along thompson i met one idiot stupid fd driver who was in the bus lane for overtaking reason i believe and insisted to cut my lane while there was clearly no enough space for him to cut into my lane, just because that he was scared that he got caught for being in a bus lane. no balls just stay in the lane and dont cut from the bus lane idiot drivers.

 

and there was one auntie driver coming from an exit where clearly she got to give way but instead squeeazed into my lane as if she got the right of way and got the cheek to look back when i tried to keep my lane. woman driver, haisss, im speechless, pls do us drivers a favour by ...... u know what to do

I think most of the way you both did the right thing, just a bit of mis-communication going on who was giving way to whom up to the point where the middle finger was given (which was wrong).

I like to think I'm quite aware of whats going on around me. In addition to the checks, I usually try and take note of all the vehicles around me and account for where they are, as well as anticipate what they might do. However the scenario I posted was that in ideal situations when it is safe, and clear to filter. Is doing it fast considered rude?

Gah this was the type of scenario that started the debate. Blur (or lazy) driver instead of continuing into his lane wanted to move into mine when we passed the junction (junction was at a bend).

 

So I quickly filtered to the lane next to mine, then overtook him, and quickly filtered back (on a straight section). GF said I was being rude. So I went "huh???", and she asked if someone filtered very quickly infront of me would I be pissed. So I gave her the amazed look and went, "if he/she did it safely why should I be angry???"

 

However the thing that I was wondering was if anyone else considers it rude, because I don't and she does.

more polite to leave more space when u speed up.....the filter with at least 2 or 3 car lengths....drive safe

Technically its not entirely correct. I shall leave it till later to debate on the technical aspects. Want to see what the consensus is on if it is rude or not

Don't think it's a problem if there's ample space, and you're already ahead by quite a bit. BUT...WHY "very quickly"?!?
