ENGINE FLUSH... So is it good or bad?

i 1st used engine flush on my coe car... thought it was good... started to have eo slight leaks... but dont know what was the cause thought it was just the engine being too old...

then found out many negetive stuff about engine flushes and told myself never to use it again... even thought i used it on my present car at 40k mileage and now at 80+k mileage there is no signs of any eo leaks... (touch wood)...

and now after reading additional info on ppl using eo to flush... flushing oils.... and lately marvel oil in the engine oil.... hmmmmm...

engine flush on a 80k mileage normal NA engine... should i or shouldnt i?.......

No need la. You change engine oil so often.....

Save your money and buy me beer. :D

If u use a decent quality EO n change every 5K km, I dont think u need a flush.

I use cheepo C@rlube synthetic EO(<$30 for 5 lit) n change every 10K km n still its very clean.

Fully agreed [nod]

honda city?...

my sunny flush with OWS at 40k.... no problems....

now at 80+k... wondering if the flush will 'kill' the oil seals or gaskets?....

To me, I consider 80k not high mileage. Keep on driving and away with the itch.

bro, dont ever use those engine flush... if you really want to try, get a bottle of kerosene... its cheaper and equally damaging to your engine... I ever used STP engine flush once on my elentra and next thing is.... oil leak.... told myself never gg to touch those quick flush chemical anymore...

if you want to play safe, shorten your OCI for a few rounds will help to helps to clean up your engine for sure, I have been practicing that for a long time... i perform a short OCI (less than 2000km) every 2 OIC (18k to 20k) using cheap oil... whenever i did that, i can see the engine oil turn brown slower on the next oil change. Its costly but its the safest way to clean your engine...

as for the MMO, after reading so much from bitog, i finally decided to try.... ive put it in on my ride at 164k km, has been put in my engine for around 2000km already. going to change it in another 3000km. So far so good. Im using redline 5w20 oil, with 30% MMO, i guess my oil is lesser then 0W15 now.... No visible leakage or oil consumption on my 166k vios till date. If the oil level can maintain at the same level and no sign of leak for another 3K, I believe it should be quite safe for most car that uses oil thicker than 0W30.

Let me know if you wanted to try, i can sell u a quart to test, since i bought the 1 gallon bottle.

bro i remember you used to use some toyota mineral oil to flush for like 500-1k correct?... i used to find it abit err... waste but occassionally i think its a good idea.. but i'd prefer to use a fully syn (those $20+ for 5 liters type) to flush for 500km max... [:)]

MMO i might try to use after my 2T finishes... still have a long way to go still go more then half a bottle and also bought a bottle of A747 to try not yet open... but i still dare not try in my EO... [:p]

anyone correct me if i am wrong...

regular engine oils, (excluding racing oils)... have detergent additives in the oil to clean the engine, (a.k.a remove combustion by products, sludge... etc

an engine flush probably is the concentrated form of the detergent additives in the oil in a more 'raw' stronger form...

to strong and it will kill 'old' gaskets... causing leaks... or remove the sludge stuck some where and cause problems...

if not strong enough waste time and $$$...

i have been changing my EO at 5k intervals for a while liao... so i presume that my engine should be quite clean... but if i know something which will further clean my engine without side effects of injured gaskets etc,... i would surely use...

Won't happen until you thrashed out the engine oil at higher/longer mileage.

The worst that I drag was till 11k plus.

Nothing will happen.

Don't waste money on those flush. Your car is not high mileage like mine. [laugh]

And I did not do any flush. Not even to my old COE car. Engine still alive and healthy when I scrapped it.

this has been discussed before and if you do an online cursory check, you will actually find that engine flushes are not recommended by manufacturers. in fact, they are discouraged.hence, if this is an important part of maintenance, it would have been indicated in the servicing list instead of being an optional item.

the reason why certain workshops are pushing this is because engine flushes help to bring in more money for the company.

Engine flush is for clogged engine...if yours is not, why flush? Maybe a COE car need a flush or you have not change EO for 100,000km travelled...

but surely not everything recommended by manufacturers is good right?...

and the fact is ADs in Singapore DO recommend engine flush.... Tan Cheong does...

but like you said its optional...

Anyways i am not saying Flush is surely good for a car... and i do believe it will disloadge some sludge from old engines and cause leaks....

as said by someone here, for new engines it probably wont hurt the gaskets... but then newer engines nothing/not much to clean/flush...

so end of the day its just wasting $ JUST LIKE all those $$$ wasting gas treatments... octane boosters.... injector cleaners etc.........

some ppl swear by injector cleaners... some think its throwing $$$ away... same for all those voltage s--t stabliziers....

i swear by 2T in petrol... some think i'm nuts...

i swear by shorter oil change intervals... some think i'm wasting $$$...

i love open pods... some prefer stock air box...

... the list goes on....

AD recommend flushing so that they can charge you more. how difficult is it to tip a bottle of stuff into the engine. good money to be made mah. anyway the AD here also know nuts one. the only thing they know like everything in singapore is $$$$.

there are so many brands of flush , addictive etc available in singapore, some come alone with the flush some got 3 in 1, like the 1i use.

i am sure not all brands got same effect and not all car, when using those addictive will feel the same after effects.

those extra addictive are there for us to use, its only up to how we use it and how those workshop advise u to use it.

for example, if your workshop advise u to flush every 10k , i think he is trying hard to make your $$$.

it make more sense and logic if flush like every 3-4 servicing, or 30-40 k . if u got change your own engine oil b4, maybe u can take note, old engine old is very sticky, esp if u over the mileage by alot, some flush make it more waterly, and when draining, it faster and more % of the old oil is drain out.
