Yesterday, I participated in a small discussion in the "Replying to The Average Singaporean cost of living" where a young lady, fresh out of Uni at age 22, was able to land a job in a bank that paid her at least $90K in the first year, incl bonuses, which allowed her to save $130K in 2 years, that allowed her to plonk down the down payment and costs necessary to purchase a freehold condo for $650K, in april 2009.

I shall take her info at face value, that there are jobs out there paying $90K or more to young people without job experience. Of course, I realise that not everybody is cut out for those jobs - perhaps those are high risk high pressure sales jobs that pay high if times are good, but easily retrench if things don't go well.

Ok - to start off let me state my interests. I am a humble guy - I am open to learning from anybody who can teach me to be better.

Can anyone share their experience or knowledge about these high paying jobs.

1. What are they?

2. What kind of qualifications to apply (eg. field of study - business, finance, engineering, etc? I take it minimum degree holder, better with honors).

3. Does one's age, gender, nationality, race, language or religion matter?

Even if I may be too old or unqualified to apply myself, this info may be useful for anyone else to apply for.

================================================

My cousin. Income tax 80K in 1st year, NUS Bus Ad [;)] ......landing a high paying job is not just about qualifications, it's a lot of luck as well.

The truth is regardless of background you can make the world a better place, it's just whether you have the conmmittment to or not....is mother teresa rich for her to do so much? why some social workers can survive on 2.5k a month? it's just how you want to live you life actually..i been though so many ups and downs but life goes on...when i see myself earning less than this wendytan what can i do? i can only blame myself for not being capable enough...but can i change my mentality to be contented? i can....

anyway i have doubts about this wendytan...she is a semi troll

Well of course me no doubt with her, if she doing sales, maybe earning 90k Pa is not an impossible thing, like myself, this month may earn alot but in the next month i may earn less, me lagi worst, need to pay office rent, basic salary pay, etc...

Turbocharged

Once my mind is freer from financial worries, I can concentrate on helping make the world a better place.

Currently, drowning in debt, so can't concentrate on other things than just survival.

Recently kena 1 medical bill for my mom which will be > $12K, which shall add to my debts.

(I asked the hospital for the name of the doc that charged Khaw Boon Wan just $8 for his heart op,

but strangely they were relunctant to share the info. I could have used such a great discount).

So a higher income bracket would go a long way to reduce my debt and slow down the rate of my hair turning grey.

Dude, it is not how much you earn, but how much you save and invest.

I realised most Spreans are very crap when comes to investment stuff and money management. All they know is "high pay", "buying stock is gamble", toto and 4D. And that's all about it.

There are so many ways to grow your money even if one income is modest. Singapore is the best place to do this because the financial system is pretty stable due to a stable gov. and there is no capital gain tax for any investment that you do. The FTs know this very well, and they exploit the investment eco-system here to the max.

I know a guy who earns 4k a month at the age of 38 but he has 3 properties. He started working at the age of 24 with a pay of 2.4k. His 3 properties now valued at more than 2 million. And he is still trying to buy more but he is now prohibited by the 40% downpayment. But he is trying to find ways to get to there.

So for WendyTan case, I am not too surprised. How much she earns, I am not interested, because I know it can be done even with 4k of salary. Anyway from her post, she is pretty money savvy, so this probably why she could do it.

Instead of asking how to get job that pays a lot, the right question is how to invest to grow your money such that it will eventually reach there.

I have a friend who is a lawyer working in a lawyer firm. 27 yrs old, abt 7k per mth, everyday work from day to night, almost 7 days a week. I calculate her pay per working hr, abt 19 bucks per hr. Juz like those working from 8 to 5, 5 days work week, earning 3500 to 4000 per mth sporean. Actually i consider these ppl not very well paid. The best paid job i ever see is my currency trader friend, early 30s, avg 80k per mth, working only avg 3 hr to 5 hr per day day trading. This type is what i call well paid job.

very good. you brought in the variable of pay/time. Now this is more reflective of whether the job is well paying or not.

thats the surprising thing... looks like I banked on the wrong industry when I did my uni. Hmm... I should advise my kids to think carefully before pursuing their further education.

Those who banked on engineering in my time are all screwed (including myself). Comparing to other industry, engineering especially those in manufacturing are the least rewarding profession.

Even worse during our time, the best goes into niche engineering fields...........now our universities are still pouring tons out despite the flood [laugh]

yeah... I agree with you on this. However, I realise that many engineers have successfully switched over to other fields, and are doing better. Something about our discipline, eye for detail, planning, yada yada. That's why I am open to taking a leap of faith to change over to the business or finance sector. Trying my luck now sending out resumes and scouring the Job DBs.
