MS FONG HANG YIN: 'The Workers' Party has proven its mettle. Perhaps the next step in burnishing its reputation is to turn down the offer of Non-Constituency MP (NCMP) seats. The PAP's Mr Sitoh Yih Pin had to overcome immense obstacles to win Potong Pasir on his third try. He did it without the advantage enjoyed by opposition candidates on the NCMP ticket. Political parties elected into Parliament should not be offered an NCMP ticket for its unsuccessful members at the expense of elected MPs who had won on merit. Elected MPs should also not use the existing office facilities of their predecessors. Their constituents would respect them more if they can show that they are as able as the ward's previous MP in implementing their vision through their own ideas and efforts.'

Opposition has more perserverance than Sitoh when WP finally took a GRC.

 

Unfortunately, writer has not realised that the NCMP ticket is something introduced by the ruling party to temper its over dominance of the Parliament and allow alternative voices to be expressed on a National platform and hopefully help in policy setting.

pro - it's a good training ground in parliament debate and oppotunity to shine and build credential. i guess in term of servicing residents, there is nothing can be done as Sylvia has mentioned, ncmp is "powerless"

con - fall into the trap that ncmp is good enough, no need elected opposition mp for alternative voice in parliament

 

do not to accept ncmp

pro - to make a statement that ncmp is powerless. to have a real alternative voice in parliament, it has to be elected mp -> good election strategy

con - lose the opportunity to build awareness of the candidate -> but this can be done separately on the ground. besides, there is not much televised on parliamentary debate on opposition questions. this round already got 6 elected opposition mp in parliament, sure has enough chance to raise questions

The fact is all the PAP candidate in opposition ward have access to RC, CC facilities in the ward. They are also the adviser for the CCMC although they are not the MP of the ward. This gives them a lot of visibilities where a lot of program that was being done by gov are being unveil by them instead of the elected MP. So a lot of the resident thought that it was the PAP candidate who fights for the resident for the program to be implemented.

 

By right, being the elected MP, they are supposed to be the adviser of the ward be it PAP or opp and they will have access to all the facilities in the ward, CC, RC, town council. So whoever lost in the GE will have to vacate the premises and let the elected MP have unlimited access to the facilities. But PAP force the 2 opp ward MP to build their own Town council giving the reason the original Town council was built by PAP and should not be used by them. We all know that the buildings are built using our tax payer money and not PAP party fund, so they should not have done this.

 

Since PA is a gov organization, it main purpose is to serve the resident, so it should not associate itself to any political party in Singapore. But the line between all the gov departments and PAP has been blurred since the country's independence. It will be interesting when WP start to grow and manage to go on par with PAP, wonder they will point this out to PAP and take back all the premises.

it's a waste of money for 2 parties to maintain their own network. and we all know, who has the financial muscle eh

does this mean PAP will maintain its current facilities in aljunied for 5 years until they fight again in 2016?

Please do not treat the rest of the Singaporeans like they were as blind as you. The NCMP idea was implemented by the PAP and town council facilities should not even be skewed to serve only the PAP at the 1st place.

Waste not only money, but of resources of which all living things on this planet have a part! Not to mention increasing the carbon footprint caused by construction activities! LTK has mentioned WPs policy of working towards alternative energy sources, stuff that's renewable & sustainable for future generations. So to waste resources building infrastructure that already exists is ridiculous, and should not be condoned by anybody.

That is why any opposing views are posted online which gains more viewerships and gets discussed.

 

After the GRC loss, the online media will be the next to fall back on them.

The cyberspace reaches more audiences than the traditional media, even Singaporeans abroad are able to keep up with the developments and offer their views. Take MCF, as long as threads don't cross the line, they are not deleted and there's a free for all discussion, unlike tradtional media, they are picked and selected.

 

P8p will never be able to get on the cyberspace to get a proper discussions and attract voters, which had long dominated anti-government views since the last 3-4 elections, starting with sammyboy. Any threads started with good intent will end up being flamed, just look at the facebooks of p8p.

Ask her go and find a spider la...talking about merit...those who walkover and pull the coat tail into parliament one how? first of all, it is the ruling party coming out all this stupid NCMP thingy....and now want people to reject it? why? scared too many WP member inside parliament is it? scared kana screw up side down is it? lame...also, the facilities are built using citizen money...why let it go to waste...stupid suggestion....

Why reject NCMP ? The money fr gov can come handy for many things that WP has in the pipe line , right ?
