Kb27 Supersonic May 31, 2011 Share May 31, 2011 maybe should buy a small non MF battery and put at home for standby. If flat, got one spare one just to start up the car. but how long can it last?? You can keep one at home, but you need to keep it fully charged at all times Which means you need to put it on a AC charger of some kind. Otherwise, the battery will self-discharged, becomes sulphated and useless in about 1 yr time. ↡ Advertisement
Kb27 Supersonic May 31, 2011 Share May 31, 2011 Back home MSCP, the batt did not work the next time. Call the AA to check and change batt. AA said batt no good liao. Due to my "suspicious" mindset, I had decided not to let the tyre shop change the batt. * at the back of my mind, I am thinking : suppose flat batt was really a scam-job, changing batt with them would let them win the game. suppose flat batt is really batt fault, losing 1 batt sales is nothing to them. Therefore, I rather let AA earn from the member [i am AA member]. Which means your battery is already dying. The tyre workshop did not do anything to make it bad. It just died at the wrong time and place leading to your suspicion. However, I still think charging $10 to jump start at their workshop is a bit too much. Elevatorman Neutral Newbie May 31, 2011 Share May 31, 2011 From my own experience, non maintenance free battery lasts as long as maintenance free battery. Mine Panasonic lasted 3 yrs 5 months. Had use a Amaron maintenance free till its end of life, 3 years 6 months. Now on my second Amaron maintenance free battery, 2 years 2 months. Am using different brand so cannot compare which type is better. Tell tail sign for non maintenance free battery, if it need frequent top up, battery is not good already. If possible, change about 2 years, 3 years is a bonus already. Anything more is extra bonus. Nowadays battery not as good maybe due to cost cutting. erm, i got a question.. since i buy my car till now.. around 3 yrs plus.. i still using e orginal battery.. during servicing i just add battery water.. do i need to change to a maintainless one? scare scare.. hahaha

Rudra Neutral Newbie May 31, 2011 Share May 31, 2011 you guys might want to view on this: http://www.mycarforum.com/index.php?autoco...p;product=16310 Last year 2009 Aug i changed my battery according to toyota's recommendations during my servicing. By following year 2010 Jan the battery failed on me and was at the 5th story of my friend's MSCP. Called in toyota's vendor. But iwas only told to call back next day morning. Called my own tow truck the uncle help me jump start. After which fixed new battery from another tyre shop and got this Battery Guard done. Now, i have no worries of the battery failing on me. There have been several times when my headlights were on and battery guard have activated to stop the discharge. Not only that, now i don't have to do every 2 year change. Just have to wait for the battery guard to activate to know that its time to change the battery. To monitor the voltage a good volt meter works well for me. Just get a jumper cable to do the job. correct me if not possible to do so. You try to find in your house have those unwanted 12v charger or not, if yes, cut the wire and attach it into crocodile clamp. This connected into your standby battery can act as trickle charge. Kb27 Supersonic June 1, 2011 Share June 1, 2011 (edited) come to think of it... we can use our car to charge up the stand by battery???? Just get a jumper cable to do the job. correct me if not possible to do so. You can use the car alternator to charge up your standby battery. Just need to wire up via a diode to the alternator, so it's constantly being charged but not used. You don't need a very thick cable in this case, bcoz the charging will be small current. In other words, you are carrying a standby battery around in your car. You can also put a switch to decide when to cut off the charging. A smart AC charger works better, bcoz it knows when to cut-off and prevent over-charging. But hooked-up to the alternator, and you have to be the "smart" one. But make sure the standby battery you carry around is big enough to start the engine when really needed. Edited June 1, 2011 by Kb27
