Adrianli Hypersonic June 3, 2011 Share June 3, 2011 Yeah I will meet my lecturer to discuss about this next Monday Thanks Frankly, I have not seen density oil separator in the market yet. Only know of the ones using centrifugal separation or honeycomb filtration. I guess the problem with density separation is time and space thus not efficient. I see that there will be two parts to ur project. One is build a scale down version of your designed boat. Two, demostrate the ability of density separation of oil and water to be used in real world situation. This separator may not necessary be scaled down and placed inside the boat. It can be a separator by itself to demostrate its capabilities. BTW, centrifugal separator and honeycomb filtration gives u almost instant clean water out. I have operated and maintained both kinds of separator before. To build the working r/c boat, S$800-1000 is more than enough. I suggest building it by plywood with reinforced fibreglass and epoxy. Use electric motor for propulsion and a few servos to operate the other stuff and probably working lights too. This part is very do-able within 1-2weeks. ↡ Advertisement
Hiphiphoray 6th Gear June 3, 2011 Share June 3, 2011 That will be the oil content meter. Can try t-loan from Fuji Automation with a small nominal fee. Do take note that IMO has a regulation of 5 or 10ppm before the water can be allowed back to the sea. Go check out oily water seperators and how they work. If you wish to achieve that, do consider purchasing the relevant equipment to detect 5ppm of oil in water. I am not only into R/C Boating but also work in the Marine Industry. Spiderman302 2nd Gear June 3, 2011 Share June 3, 2011 Hi everyone, I am currently doing on my Final Year Project on designing a mechanical device to prevent oil spill in sea. So I intended to make a device which I can actually remote control it, but I am trying to find places where I can get propellers and some powerful engines, and also rudder stocks. Anyone knows where I can get them from? Please help. Thanks! Your help will be very much appreciated! Care to share your idea ? How it works. Or are you just reinventing the wheel ? How your idea is better than the current ones (I assuming your device is to clean up the messy oil spil). I believe your prof is looking at new ideas. More efficient, more effective. Lower cost. Easier to operate. More environmentally friendly etc... Perhaps you can share your idea for discussion, otherwise everybody is guessing and give you all sorts of advices which are not useful for you. Such ideas are normally guarded secrets. No one in the industry will tell u exactly how their system work unless u are one of them. Like how they cap the oil spill in Mexico Gulf. The details are all U only get the general idea how it was capped.

Just go to one of those shops selling. They sell all sorts of spareparts including RC unit. Propeller ? Use fan blade.(small fan lar). How to build a boat ? Dont, you should be focusing on your oil spill clean up system. Not the boat.
Adrianli Hypersonic June 3, 2011 Share June 3, 2011 But I don't know how to build the boat Then do a combine project with ur naval arch course mates. Simple steps here : 1) design ur boat 2) have every panel well drawn on paper 3) get thin plywood 4) trace every panel on the plywood 5) cut out the plywood shape 6) sand ur plywood 7) use super glue and tack all panels together to form the boat 8) sand the boat 9) use 30min epoxy and apply it all over the boat. 10) lay fibreglass over the epoxy 11) these will waterproof the boat and strengthern it 12) mount ur motor, stuffing box and rudder 13) install ur eletronic speed controller, receiver and batt 14) ur boat is ready for maiden voyage 15) fit all necessary fittings and lights 16) re-maiden boat n ensure all working 17) present boat to lecturer. 18) the end. Simple???

Please dont use r/c aeroplane stuff to use on boat hor. They are not waterproof. They will give u magic smoke when comes in contact with water. Use proper r/c boat propeller. They have the correct pitch, diameter and blade angles. Wana do scale, do it properly and not like some primary school project. There are proper r/c boat hobby shops in SG. Go to Fook Hai building, level one or basement and Vertex at Ubi.
Adrianli Hypersonic June 3, 2011 Share June 3, 2011 See the insides of one of my boat. Please dont ask abt the cost, it is definately above ur project budget.

Anyone knows where I can get them from? Please help. Thanks! Your help will be very much appreciated! I believe more precise description would help. Example:- to prevent oil spill in sea, likely beyond you and me to prevent oil spill at sea, also likely beyond you and me to control oil spill in sea, can be too difficult at the moment to control oil spill at sea, within your potential No money no talk: you budget for going to demostrate at sea? you prepared the logistics need (book equipment storage, transport/boat ferry etc...) Note that sometimes idea can only work in laboratory not outdoors like at sea (climate/weather/other parties). If doing inside laboratory, use a RC boat to pull a semi-submerged impermeable curtain around the the oil spill will contain it (same as trawler-fisihing). I hope all these helps. Karoon Turbocharged June 3, 2011 Share June 3, 2011 My school budget is $1500. I am still thinking of the type of material to use for the hull of the thing, must not be too heavy, so that the engine will not be too big. Car engine too big already sounds like a typical Top Gear challenge to me

The final idea is just an idea. You want to score, go back to the drawing board. Make an impressive design journal. Good design Brief, design specifications, Ideation and development of ideas with good sketches. Final presentation use CAD software to present. Csbo Neutral Newbie June 4, 2011 Author Share June 4, 2011 Okay guys, I shall explain a little bit further into detail. The product I am doing is basically a device that can actually separates the oil and water when taken in by the device 1. It will be like a shape of a box, the shape might change later but I am not sure at the moment. 2. There will be an opening where both the water and the oil will be taken in and goes into a tank where the separation will start. 3. The oil will then be pumped into a storage tank where it is specially for the oil storage 4. As for the water, there will be a suction pump to suck it out of the device, means back to the water, with some filter at the end to ensure that there will not be any oil remaining going back into the water. 5. As for the remote control, I was thinking if I were to put the device there and let the oil and water come to it, why not I move the device to the mixture of oil and water? That is why I need some propellers and engine with radio controls. My device will not be too big as it's only a prototype. Maybe the size will be 70cm by 35cm by 35cm. Just like a small table top. That's why I am getting some propellers and engines which are powerful enough to drive the device
Csbo Neutral Newbie June 4, 2011 Author Share June 4, 2011 See the insides of one of my boat. Please dont ask abt the cost, it is definately above ur project budget. This looks great! But I only need to move the device like RC boat, not so fast but at least I can move it. Not going for racing competition.
