Identiti Neutral Newbie August 7, 2011 Share August 7, 2011 The R6600 is using X7. Differences between the X8 and X7 I'm not too sure, but X8 sure looks good from the pics. R6600 will eventually be upgraded to X8 as I've done a check with M3 Asia some time back. This is because Papago in Taiwan already dropped support for X7 and below versions for X8 already. TMC is a free service for lifetime from M3 Asia. Don't understand why East Gear only provide 2 years subscription for their Holux GPS (maybe because due to more info like car park availability and weather, which I find totally redundant). went to challenger yesterday. sales person there told me that TMCs are all 2 year subscription free and subsequently is $20/year, that includes the R6600.but even so, still very satisfied with the R6600 as comparing similar specs of a Garmin, the Papago! costs half the price of a Garmin. of cos, the Garmin looks nicer but I'm not that willing to pay an extra $200+ just for nicer looks. ↡ Advertisement
Ginger1 Neutral Newbie August 7, 2011 Share August 7, 2011 After some research and comparison, I finally got the Garmin 1490 at $219 from www.bestbuyelec.com. The $219 price is not advertised but you can get it if you ask the salesman about the Garmin 1490 special promo (mentioned in another car forum). It has a 5 inch screen, bluetooth and lifetime traffic information (TMC). I found this the best value for money and there are generally good reviews online on this company. It easily trashes all the other GPS deals. I am using it now and I have no regrets.
Mivec9 1st Gear September 3, 2011 Share September 3, 2011 hi bro, i got the same problem as u. GPS sometimes lost stats, not able to log on. even after one hour drive, lost recept. then update firmware, managed to get it going, but at times, will still lose stat recepts. same model too, 255W, Now based on Bro Redstorm's recommendation, aiming at Garmin 2465W i think tomorrow got road show at suntec, check this out http://www.garmin.com.sg/ i read the gps forum and it seems this is the common problem with 255 series model. maybe affecting 2xx series or some other similar ones. some used it perfectly for long time, while some users said they got a lemon and unable to lock satellite signals. if not wrong, should have minimally 3 sat locks to be able calculate routing. Need to read more to find out why is this happen - losing of the statellite signals intermittently.
Eugn86 3rd Gear September 3, 2011 Share September 3, 2011 Been using Garmin 205W for 4 years.... bought a TomTom GO 750 at Comex. Astonished by how good its build quality is, how substantial the whole unit feels, especially the mount. My Garmin felt so flimsy in comparison. But Garmin has the nicer graphics. Not sure about usability yet but initial impressions is that the TomTom interface is not as user-friendly, probably i'm still new to it. Other than that, really pleased. Redstorm 1st Gear September 6, 2011 Share September 6, 2011 (edited) Features means nothing to any brands. In fact, most brands will have similar features. The most important thing to look out for when buying a GPS device is about how detailed their map is and the map support. Together with Garmin, Tom Tom is also very popular on both sides of the Atlantic but sadly, over the years they have not been popular beyond USA and Europe partly due to the lack of map support. Garmin is the no. 1 brand in the world due to the wide availability of map of almost every country in the world - both official and third party map. It owes its popularity to the fact that it is the only brand that has a third party reversed engineered compiler where you can compile your own map. Many people bought Garmin to get free maps. Tom Tom's foray into this region is only quite recent and any brand that is going to rely just on its own map is going to play catch up with others. Firstly, official map is not free unlike third party members where you can find tons of them (sorry, only Garmin maps). There are mapping communities around this region and they compile maps for Garmin. Their maps are so good and even better than the Garmin official map and so much so that Garmin now recognises malsingmaps as a partner and preloaded its map in all their devices. Unless Tom Tom can partner a mapping community such as malfreemaps, it will take a long long time before they can be mentioned in the same breath as Garmin. Even Papago is popular today because it realises the importance of collaborating with a mapping community (malfreemaps) to compile its map. And, MFM maps (data being supplied to Papago) are about par with MSM and also Garmin maps. So, there isn't much difference unless you prefer the Papago graphic. Esmond Neutral Newbie September 7, 2011 Share September 7, 2011 Any GPS that can double up as DVR. You mean DVR in GPS? Yes, there is: IPHONE4 WITH papago 8.0. I think this is the only solution now. Garmin is out in this area, Garmin even dont have a navigation software in iPhone, I guess they are out of human resource of R&D, otherwise no body will give up such fruitful market. Shor 1st Gear September 7, 2011 Share September 7, 2011 (edited) Garmin's till now always top of GPS chart. I used Garmin many years ago and I begin to love it. Frankly, a good map in any GPS system will serve you well in Mal and Sing. I am holding a Marbella now, so far so good, and the Hotline is 24 hrs. One minus point is when your GPS is indoor, and you are doing your first search, it takes quite long to load. I suggest if you are using Marbella, wait till you outdoor then on it. Besides the Malsing map, you are eligible to choose one oversea map for permanent use, other than that, you can always rent a map from them for 1 month FOC.....hope this helps! I've been thinking of switching from Garmin to Marbella given their good support. But saw mixed reviews online. Care to share your experience? Jonhnise Neutral Newbie September 10, 2011 Share September 10, 2011 Hi all, Currently, I'm using Shinco GM3510 (I think) which is using mapking and Malsingmap. It has faithfully served me for past 5 years and I have to finally 'decommission' it due to the lack of map update (last update was year 2009). Now, start to look around for a new GPS and wow, so many models around . I just have a few simple requirements: 1) Fast GPS satellites lock on (On average? 'Cos depends on satellites, but worst & rare case less than 30s) 2) Lifetime map update with latest SG & MY POIs 3) Correct routing for both SG and MY (I travel up north occasionally) 4) Search by Postal codes for SG 5) 3D Junction View (think it is a must when travelling up north as some of their filter lanes is like few hundred metres long) So far, I searched and found the following common models: - Garmin 2465 - Marbella M990+ - Papago R5800 Can any owner of the above models provide your review (based on the above listed requirement)? Or if you own other models, pls provide your review as well. Appreciate alot!!! I have changed my head unit three months ago! As a matter of fact, i tend to the oem cargps as they fit the dash completely and much more cheaper from the factory than the market...

You can go to either one of them to get it fixed but it is not done locally and they will have to send it to Taiwan. KARTer 2nd Gear October 9, 2011 Share October 9, 2011 Hope to check on two features in MY: 1. Speed indicator: I believe the speedo (digital) that comes with some GPS system is based on satellite signals etc and therefore more accurate thant the speedo of our car? i find that at about 120kmh indicated by my car speedo, the GPS showed about 6kmh slower at 114kmh instead. Any bro has similar experience? 2...Speedcam locations: by the time the GPS flashes the warning for speedcam, is it too late and the cam would have already snapped our car number if we are speeding? If not, what kind of warning distance the GPS gives, 1km or more for us to slow down before the cam's range? Many thanks ↡ Advertisement
