white-elephant paddle shift [laugh]

How about the stick?

E.g

- notice how many times the drift driver need to turn the steering? He cannot do that with the paddles. It is only possible with the stick. Imagine doing that no. of steering turns in U-turn or B-roads at higher speed - the stick and clutch control remains the king.

Look Mum, no paddle shift nor gizmo steering buttons on my GT-86!

Just pure-clean fun with 3-spoke steering, a hand-brake and a simple 6-speed MT.

A Fuji-san doing a test run with a LHD export model at Fujitsu speedway in Oct ^_^

PS: watch for last 30 sec when he goes thru a few drifts after the final straight thru the grand stand with VSC off.

Pure control. [thumbsup]

I use paddle shift and sometimes my passerages will be amaze by my actions.

With left hand I upshift (1st~2nd) just when turning out from small road...

And I only use paddle shifts for 3 days to learn the trick...

For these pros, if that paddle shifts were to be replaced by the stick, in no time they will be able to master upshift/downshift no matter which direction the steering wheel is facing.

this is pure skill......hit the barrier and he goes down the cliff...however drifting is and was never the pinnacle of motorsport....

yeah. i prefer this kind of paddle shift.

clutchless except u choose what gears u want and when u want.

no auto downshift or upshift.

which cars have this feature?

Toyota MRS SMT. No clutch, no gear, only paddle shift. However you need to upshift and downshift yrselves. The transmission will not upshift or downshift for you.

Initially I was one of those die hard manual fans, swinging the stick around does give the sense of control and more importanly it gives me a sense of high proficiency and dream of a racer, High rev engine brake, changing gear seamlessly in a bend with one hand on the stick and the other on the wheel.

With a good paddle shift which allow you to shift yr gear up and down, never stall. dropping gear at a touch of a button. No clutch in or out.

That is if you want to drift or learn to drift. I am not interested in learning how to drifting. I am only interested in watcjhing others drift.

Ok, manual for you and paddle shift for me. [drivingcar]

Actually, I would expect the paddies can be learn within 10 mins after driving around since it is so easy to use.

That is the whole point of it since one can forget about clutch control, throttle blipping, rev matching etc etc.

Sadly the true essence of driving joy will be lost when all those factors are removed from the player.

yeah. one cannot replace the tactile feel when comes to manual control.

F1 is a totally different ream: Its job is to win a race, not for personal pleasure between the car and the driver.

If that you use selespeed, you will know that some thing so easy is not so easy.

I think you missed my point: Paddies are great, but will never replace the stick.

Drifting is just the icing on the cake that comes with the stick [:p]

I haven't driven an Alfa before.

Care to share why Selespeed isn't as easy as it was intended to be?

It is not a torque, CVT or DSG GB but a manual GB without clutch pedal.

It has a pump (maybe more) to control the clutch

Wow..that GB sure does sound a torture to drive with, a pity for such emotional car like Alfa. [smallcry]

It is actually a joy to drive...

No other cars speaks to you like how an alfa would..

Paddle shift is fun, you can drag your gears if you want to, you can down gear while taking a bend to exit faster (and smoother), you can upshift one gear and let the car roll when you see a red light up ahead, you can down gear and do engine break while going down slope and last but not least the feel of tapping on the paddle shift is song!

Depends on what you mean by "intended to be" - once moving Selespeed can be very very smooth - if you use the correct technique.
