Could it be a case that the guy that approved the name is clueless about history?

S21 I never made the connection - but then when I study we never learn Vietnam War but we did cover WW2.

But yep - Auschwitz is a pretty stupid name for a bar.

However you should have seen my face the first time I saw Red Swastica School. I literally did a double take - then I started learning about the true meaning of the Swastica. My kid now attends a school with a Swastica in the logo and it doesn't give me any sort of pause anymore.

A shame really that the nazis' ursup of an otherwise intriguing symbol has managed to sear the imagery of unspeakable horror into the consciousness of humanity. Given how its fascist connotation has vastly outshadowed its original antediluvian usage (in Buddhism), one can only scarcely imagine the scale of terror that was mounted in that brief period.

The Nazis misappropriated that sacred symbol from the Indian Hindus (its use in Buddhism is as a result of cultural descent from Hinduism). Stupid Aryan wannabes, Hitler and his gang. And all the neo-White Power morons. [rolleyes]

1. The Nazis weren't really fascists - this would be pretty much secondary to their beliefs

2. Are you sure that the swastica is antediluvian? This would make it pre Noah flood. I don't have a timeline for the flood, but there are recorded instances of the Swastica going back to about 4000 BC

Do take note that there are differences betweent the Nazi Swastica and the traditional Buddhist symbol (most notable the orientation of the arms) and that in some places there is now quite serious moves towards "reclaiming the swastica"

Do also take note that the "good luck number" of 88 has serious links to the nazi party, and in some circles if you use the number the first association that some people will make is that you are a neo nazi. (eg: Lucky 88 Cafe = neo nazi hangout)

Yeah - I always knew the symbol was "copied and misappropriated" by Hitler - but didn't really fullly understand till I came to this part of the world - growing up we didn't really see indians or buddhism.

Houston (as in "Houston we have a problem") brings to mind all the tragic deaths of astronauts in the American Space Program.

Johannus sounds like Anus.

Frankly, I'm more bewildered than offended that anyone would register their son's name as such. [rolleyes]

Won't happen unless the neo-Nazi morons repudiate the symbol. I don't see such morons doing anything useful to humanity in the near future. And so for now, one will still have to accept ludicrous things like being guilty of a crime if one were to innocently display this ancient auspicious symbol on a T-shirt in Germany. [rolleyes]

This "reclaiming" business never quite works out anyway. The African Americans have been trying to reclaim the "N" word for ages now. The word still carries a HUGE racist connotation, especially when used by redneck racist trash. All the AAs have done is to add the burden of alleged hypocrisy to their shoulders - I've actually seen redneck racist trash railing against the AAs for their hypocrisy in using the epithet on one another while forbidding those of other races from using it on them. Good grief.

88 = HH (H is the eighth letter of the Roman alphabet) = Heil Hitler.

The number 14 also carries a racist (White Power/Neo Nazi) connotation. Some rubbish about 14 particular words that emphasise the need to preserve the White race. Or other such dumb crud, trust racist morons to come up with something so trite.

At least good ol' Douglas Adams did something special to enshrine 42 fondly in our collective memories. [laugh]
