Hi Folks,

For many years, I have been bugged by my sensitive nose problem. I tend to have running nose easily and if it is not well-taken care of, it will result in more problems such as sore throat, cough and fever. The problem can be recurring.

Thinking of going for a nose operation and have the problem resolved once and for all.

Does anyone have any experience with such a nose operation? What is the cost, procedure, operation duration, side effects etc? Would appreciate your sharing of information.

Many thanks.

I have a few good friends who are specialists in Mount Elizabeth

they basically tell me never to undergo surgery if it is avoidable. Things can go wrong in 1% of cases. so how lucky do you feel today?

anyway, I used to have a sinus problem that sounds the same as you. My ENT looked and it and said, just don't sleep with the aircon on. Not sure if this is your problem, but give it a try

he says the aircon can cause a blocked nose due to changes in temperature, then you start to breathe in through your mouth while you sleep, this in turn leads to a sore throat - and it keeps going round in circles.

And take polaramine x 1 before you sleep. Get it from Guardian.

Your condition is sinus? Mine was allergic rhinitis, I said was because I am cured of this condition. I am grateful to my ENT, the late Dr Seow for his care and in half a year of treatment I was cured. No more sensitive and blocked nose. He had this advice for me, avoid cold drinks, warm plain water is best.

Avoid surgery at all costs.

Few years ago, the doctor did a quick check on my nose and suggested me to go for an operation. But I didn't follow up with his suggestions back then.

I tend to have coughs which could last for weeks. Doctor said it was caused by internal dripping in the nasal passage way which triggers the cough (trying to expel the drippings).

There were times when I spent afew months in cool winter overseas, the place was dry but I didn't have the nose problem for that few months.

For me, sensitve nose and cough come together.

I would drink hot Ginger tea (without sugar). That alleviates the problem for a while.

Ginger drinks help to "dry up" my body.

How does polaramine compare with other medicine like Clarinase, Claritine?

when i was a teen, i had blocked nose easily. i used something called afrin or something which contains oxymetazoline (definitely wrong spelling). sure cure but i realised that by the time i was in ns, no matter how much i dump into the nose, it doesnt work.

i went for nose ops. they chop off the meat inside. for 2 weeks, blood and mucus kept leaking from the nose. you mist endure this. full recovery is about one month. after one month, i took out a pee sai that is the size of my thumb nail!!!

after that till now, 20 yrs after the ops, never came back

from what i heard, most came back because they had sensitive nose. my probably never came back because i did not have senesitive nose in the first place. just whole day blocked nose

Try to examine your diet and living environment first before jumping into ops.

Do you take preserved foods frequently? Is your living environment "overwhelmed" with too much dust? Is your house getting enough sunshine?

Clarinase contains pseudoephedrine I think, not good for your blood pressure for long term use

Anyway I have tried all sorts of combinations and my advise (from the ENT) to you is:

1) sleep without aircon

2) take polaramine x 1 before you sleep

3) suck a sweet while you sleep - this keeps you from breathing through your mouth. It works for me, but try not to choke yourself, perhaps a ricola gel sweet is safe, quite small. (no. 3 is my own advice, not the doctor) woods peppermint sweet is my choice

Do not use afrin for more than 3 days in a row. If you continue, your nose will become worse than before.

Warm drink does help. I was given a nasal spray which is a glass bottle with a green longish cap. One side effect is my sense of smell a bit screwed up, people fart I also dont know. [laugh]
