Maybe the authorities should start towing vehicles parked illegally away. And redemption of the car would require a new COE. This way, we will have lesser cars on the road.

It will then push the COE prices even higher.

Grace period is both impractical and hard to execute. Imagine the parking warden must come and note down all vehicles in the CP, then wait 15 mins before issuing tickets.

I'm more calling for them to be more lax to those parking in proper designated lots and focus their attention more towards those parking along the roadsides and driveways.

I've seen parking wardens dutifully issuing tickets inside MSCP and then turning a blind eye to those parking along the driveways maybe for fear of being approached *facepalm*

Can't really blame cos it's all human nature though..

How hard can it be to execute the grace period? Its easy for the system to scan the IU when the car enters and log the time it entered. When the car exit as long as within the grace period the system will know and not deduct anything.

If you are talking about those carparks with coupon parking then there is no need for the grace period. The grace period is there so that you can enter the carpark to pick or drop off someone and leave. If the carpark has coupon parking you just don't tear the coupon can already. As long as you park your car and go off somewhere you should tear a coupon because you are using the lot. You can take the risk by not tearing a coupon if you are leaving soon but then its not the parking warden's fault if they decide to summon you. You have parked your car and you are using the lot. You should be paying for it.

Ever seen a warden who issued a summon to a car that was just parked. The guy parked and ran off some where without tearing coupon. The warden just walked over immediately and issued a summon upon seeing no coupon. Guess the guy was really in a hurry not to see the warden.

Aiyah...I forgot to put another question in the poll. Would you park illegally if you know that it will be an hazard or caused inconvenience to other road users? Next time I have to draft out my poll qns le.

Then soon no one can afford cars in singapore, and so you have no more illegal parking by the roadside. :)

For example, at this current rate, I think I am better off taking public transport even though the service is terrible... (Lucky my COE still have 4 years to go from now.... )

i believe too, at this current fine for illegal parking, many people think, better park illegal, then follow the rule.

to be honest, for people afford at least $40k above car, what is the meaning of chance to get fine of $100 ?

so people who drive 7 series or s series or 2 door car, will/ always think:

- there is 50-50 i get fine.

- if get fine too, only how much ?

- the warden also still need look left and right in 5 min(looking for driver) before he/ she put the ticket.

Maybe the really rich wouldn't feel the pinch. But assuming you have bought a reasonably priced new sedan with the current COE, instalment is ard $900 and above (min downpayment). Having to pay $100 extra is siong lor. If super suay the driver kenna a few tickets, I think that month don't need to drive liao cos no money to pump petrol and pay ERP. If tighten waist belt and drive then take chances to park w/o paying and suay suay get another ticket. Making things go from bad to worse.

Don't ask where got so suay one. Think again when one person really suay...a string problems will come. Usually because when you are thinking why so suay, you forgot to take note of other things and it leads to other problems.

We are almost reaching a sample size of 100. Does the result match what you have experienced ard you?

The carpark where I live, at least 5 out of 10 will get a ticket. One or 2 would have escaped when a handful of drivers do not know how to park their cars and have part of their car going into the other lot.

when one is suay, can really be darn suay....for my previous car, day 1 of my ownership, i kenna ticketed for parking coupon's time starting 10 min later....imagine how unlucky one has to be to kenna ticketed during those 10 min....sigh [:(]

which is why there should be demerit points for illegal parking.

money may not be a problem for those driving mid-high end luxury cars.

but they only have 24 points altogether.

If the government wants to they can always make it such that the demerit points are only given to the owner of the car. This way everyone will drive more carefully already. Cuz can't get people to take the rap and they'll only lend the car to people whom they believe won't drive in a manner which would get them any demerit points. Parent's will also be more wary of letting their children drive their cars especially if they need a car for work. [rolleyes]

Simple, buy a car under family member's name and he will be the named driver. Demerit points tag to owner mah. When the demerit points of the owner almost used up, transfer car to another owner lor.

Of course its not fool proof. But its definitely going to make alot of people think twice before speeding unnecessarily or drive recklessly. Most families have more than one car. How to keep changing? My family have 4 cars and 5 people. So what if one person's demerit points used up? The rest still have to drive safely. And it'll make many parents ensure their child drives safely or don't drive the car at all.

Would you lend your car to someone whom you know will drive recklessly if the demerit points tag to owner only? I guess you won't right.

I don't mind those people who illegally park their car, but they should at least make sure they don't block the road and inconvenience other road users...

Thank you for reminding me that I should have asked if you knew (honestly) that parking your car causes inconvenience to other road users, will you still go ahead to park?

After 3 weeks, 107 of you have participated in this poll.

For question 1 I can see that out of 10 drivers, 2 will take the risk to park illegally. The remaining is more cautious and will weigh the risk. Among those who will scan the surroundings before making a decision, more believe in Monkey See Monkey Do.

Question 2, thank god most of the drivers don't hold it against people who filed a complaint. 75% take ownership and don't push the blame to others.

Question 3, this question is poorly phrased. 25% don't believe this "what goes around...comes around". But I do believe that some who parked illegally does ensure that their vehicle is of no obstruction to traffic before leaving their vehicle. But since we have so many ppl who take reference from others is likely to park around the first few cars created a series of problems.

Link penalty to taxation rate. Puny penalty coupled with low enforcement freqency doesn't deter.

Best is to increase taxation by 3%, then 6%, then 12% and so on. :D
