Ssbcc 1st Gear January 27, 2012 Share January 27, 2012 My 7 year old desktop finally died and now gives me error messages when I try to boot it. I don't think I should just throw it down the rubbish chute. Does anyone know how to dispose of a desktop? Can it be given away (after formatting the HDD)? Any ideas? ↡ Advertisement

Ssbcc 1st Gear January 27, 2012 Author Share January 27, 2012 Ever heard of garang guni? This person will even pay you a sum some of money for it. Last time I sold old laptop to the karang guni man, he paid me $5 for it (incl. the carrying case). I would rather give it to somebody who needs it. Ssbcc 1st Gear January 27, 2012 Author Share January 27, 2012 please post the specs and describe your problem first. It's a Dell pentium 4 running Windows XP, 1GB ram. It's so old it still has a 3.5in floppy drive. The whole system was already having problems (the LCD would have a yellow tinge after being on for a while) and I knew it would not last too long. Now its refusing to boot. After 6+ years, I think the HDD has finally given up. Don't think it's worth repairing. So I want to get rid of it, or give it to somebody who might be able to make use of it.

Pentium 4 system hmmm i am guessing it is the infamous 478 pins Prescott since it is 7 years old. i see your point. Yes not worth repairing cos you may never know which other components will go kaput on you. Been there done there. However if you mention that it is so problematic, then passing to a charity might be a curse in disguise. Unless you can try to troubleshoot to make everything go swee swee. Anyway if HDD uplorry you should see the message after BIOS saying something along the lines of "Invalid system disk. Insert disk and strike keyboard key to continue" Also, bro, you shoud change your system liao. I like to use my desktop for an extended period too. Mine is coming to 6 years. However when i buy my system, i try to futureproof by poring through technology and product roadmaps of Intel and/or AMD just to ensure the platform won't EOL on me like the following year or something. I just did a mid life product renewal program aka replacement of certain parts to bring my specs up to standard. Very cheap nia. Just got a quadcore Q6600 for $50 and whacked to max out RAM to 8GB. Outlay for RAM was about 80 bucks. I thought was inexpensive for midlife upgrade program.

Watwheels Supersonic January 27, 2012 Share January 27, 2012 (edited) Nowadays with the trend of tablets and ultra thin laptops the price of new desktops are so bloody cheap you can laugh until peng. I think even TS give it to someone also no takers. Edited January 27, 2012 by Watwheels
Kangadrool Supersonic January 27, 2012 Share January 27, 2012 i last try, they ask me to pay him $5 to get rid of my pc Wait for those desperate karung guni who come door-to-door to collect trash. They will pay you $5 for your PC instead of you having to pay $5 for them (TC removal team). I got rid of my iMac for $10.
