KARTer 2nd Gear April 4, 2012 Share April 4, 2012 If a person is a praise-addict, then he is a self-promotor, not a team-player & primed for failure. IMO, there is a clear line between giving due credit and heaping praises. Both can be easily spotted by discerning observer. My point is giving compliment is a delicate affair. How we use it can determine if we reap more benefit or result in back-fire. I came across a worker who is a bit of an introvert but with hidden potentials. Before he joined our team, he was always sidelined and not given the chance to show his abilities. Over the years, his enthuriasm dropped. Things started to change when someone began paying him attention and some words of appreciation for the work he did. Today, he is always ranked in the top percentile during annual assessments. Good thing is that he doesnt become a praise-addict, but allowed the initial prasies open a new world for him. ↡ Advertisement

Have you ever seen how good horses run in a race track.... Some good horses, just stay within distance and when the rest are out of breath, they chiong in front .... Neutralsg 5th Gear April 4, 2012 Share April 4, 2012 when a chinese receives praises, he'll say "no lah, i am not really good...." when a westerner receives praises, he'll just say "thank you" are chinese being humble, genuinely humble? I think such recipients of praise are just being modest rather than humble.
Neutralsg 5th Gear April 4, 2012 Share April 4, 2012 (edited) Agree. I like to receive compliments mainly from those who are smart and respectable because they know I have done is more than what I am expected. To me, those who anyhow give compliments to their subordinates are usually weak superiors because they do not know what work standard to be expected from them, so they would just apply what they learnt from books blindly. EQ does have its significance to enable a superior to know what is praiseworthy and what isn't. Sometimes, when there isn't a need to praise a staff directly, I acknowledge his or her good work attitude (as a role model) to others as a guide when constructive criticism may not go down well with those who can improve. In so doing, it's virtually killing two birds with one stone when the one acknowledged hears such acknowledgement from their colleagues.
