I am a cyclist. I usually ride my bike once a week in a group on a route that goes from Yio Chu Kang to Mandai and to Yishun and back. Sometimes I take the Changi Coastal road also with my friends. I also drive a car and have been driving for more than 15 years. So I guess I can give a more objective view then some forumers here who consistently bark for cyclists' blood everytime they see one on the road.

First off, those 3 cyclists are riding much too dangerously and my cycling group for all the times that I have been with them have NEVER RODE LIKE THAT. We ALWAYS stop at traffic lights even if it means the group will be seperated and we maintain a single file unless we are overtaking each other or on very isolated roads like the Seletar West Link. Those 3 cyclists in the video have put their lives at risk by riding past a red light at speed and in between vehicles which we will never do. Its cyclists like these that probably give the majority of us a bad name.

Curse and swear at them all you want. Quite frankly if they had met with an accident at that junction they will have no one else to blame but themselves. But do refrain from cursing at the rest of us who are just trying to enjoy a sport that we love and are obeying the traffic rules on the road.

Cheers.

I think i know which group you cycle with. Have seen them cycling and I am sure all of them stop at traffic lights.

With all due respect, as a driver yourself, you must know that the reason for our already high car ownership cost is due to limited road spaces resulting in congestion. The road taxes, COEs and ERPs are all cost everyone bear to ensure vehicles on the road moves quickly.

To have bicycles on the road that requires traffic to slow down and overtake cyclist because they enjoy a sport is wrong and insist on cycling on roads when there are other places to cycle and enjoy their hobby is just plain stupid and wrong, and inconsiderate.

Where do we end? Why are cyclist so special? Why not have roller bladers? football, Netball, Captains ball, Tennis, badminton and basketball on the roads? I am sure these people love their sports and just wanna have fun... Lets have them all on the road and insist traffic take care of their safety!

For cyclist, please. Go to East Coast Park or cycle on pedestrian pathsway. If not, I have an alternative for you... take your precious sat ki mountain bike and cycle on the SMRT tracks and ask the trains to give you your 1.5m safety margins.

IMO alot of these cyclist are drivers. So actually they are saving space for other drivers. They already paid COE and road tax but then they are using their bicycle on the road. A bicycle is definitely alot smaller and in traffic jams definitely takes up alot less space and contributes much less to the traffic situation.

If these cyclists were to give up cycling and drive everyday instead, I think there'll be even more cars on the road at that time.

Are you trying to me humorous? A driver driving his car at cruising speed at Coastal Road on the left lane causes far far less congestion than cyclist travelling at 20km/h that requires people to over take them.

Anyway, 1st we do not know if they are also motorist and 2nd they would not be driving too if they are on the pedestrian path or at East Coast Park.

This is correct, for the major cities that have planned to include cycling as a mainstream form of transport. more cyclists actually frees up more space on the roads. You can see the Dutch pp saying this in the video below. This video shows how the US planners are learning to migrate the Dutch cycling system into the states, reducing dependence on cars and oil.

http://www.streetfilms.org/from-the-nether...ikeway-designs/

The problem in Singapore is the planners do not have a concrete plan to include cycling as a transport mode, only as recreational mode, hence the Park Connector Network. plus the govt is earning 40 cents per litre for petrol pumped. people fail to realise that. the more you drive, the more revenue the govt earns. the more you cycle, the lesser they earn. so why should they give up road space and revenue at the same time?

at 2:40 in the video, "the roads are limited in this town", "imagine if all these cyclists are driving, there will not be enough space for everyone"

every country and city has its own character and needs, but the Dutch example can be used to understand how cycling can complement driving, especially with limited roads and a high population density. This sounds like Singapore to me.

The dutch have been working on this since the oil crisis in the 70s, so cycling did not happen over night.

Maybe you can help answer a question that is always on my mind when I see cyclists on the Changi Coastal Road.

Why does cycling enthsiasts like to cycle on the main road instead of the cycling lane, that is running parallel the entire lenght of the road?

As most of us know, many goods/heavy vehicle travels that stretch of road, and every so often we'll read that some cyclist die after being hit.

Because that cycling lane is not really a dedicated cycling lane. Got pedestrians walking, got some families with small kids learning to cycle. A road bike on level road will be travelling at roughly 35-40km/h. If a kid learning to cycle suddenly swerve infront of the cyclist, he'll definitely not be able to stop in time. Many of those cyclists on changi coastal road are trying to cycle fast for training. Not like those cyclists cycling leisurely in the park. I tried cycling on a cycling lane before and even at 25km/h got pedestrians staring at me like as if I am wrong to cycle of the path. And I still have to keep braking and looking out for children running around.

To my knowledge most are non-drivers, so never heard of Highway Code or road safety, unless accident involved

Har, my entire group consists of drivers. All the other groups that we've seen also consist of drivers.

I am a driver/cyclist. I cycle mostly at night to avoid traffic.

A good reason for cyclists not to come in and defend cycling on roads - this is a ka ki kong ka ki song thread. so enjoying jerking yourself off , especially for those who like curse cyclists to be knocked down and die.

If you ever get knock down, standing at a bus stop or jogging on pavement, due to some stupid driver who was drunk or cannot drive properly, you will get the same response you are giving out now - you should stay at home and never come out.

If you are smart enough, aside from poor discipline (the YouTube riders are clearly in the wrong), you should know that everyone has a right to use the road, driver, cyclist or pedestrian. The 2 reasons why people are pissed off now are

- huge increase of interest in cycling as a hobby,

- poor management of car population which has now reduced road space usage and drivers now unwilling to even give 1.5m space as they deem the cyclists as blocking their "right" of way, especially with so much righteousness that they have paid so much to buy a car. BTW, I own 2 cars in may name, but I never think I own the road, unlike some pp here.

If you think cyclists should not use the road, please petition LTA to BAN cycling on all public roads. Clearly you don't understand this is the result of poor policies resulting in high stress on the roads.

So enjoy jerking yourself off. and wipe it off when you are done.

Where is the like button??? [thumbsup]

I seriously hated all did god damn mother fxxxxx cyclist on the rd.. They can cycle in a platoon formation n expect we drivers to give way.. Give my ass man.. Eva once I went to Sungei kadut for wk on a sun morning, it was a single lane n Lotsa heavy vehicles traveling.. Imagine if an accident occurred? Jam the whole damn rd!! It's ok that they die as they ask for it but it be serious when they affect the ppl that are going to dat industrial area to earn ther living.. Worst part, garment supports them.. Some ppl even paste the 1.5m matters sticker on their car n encouraging dis cyclist.. When dis video was posted, was hoping to see perhaps a trailer or Wat heavy vehicle fr our driven by our neighboring brothers give them a close near miss n sending them pissing their pants... Dat be fun!! If cyclist expects drivers to do their part, then these 3 clowns are really giving a gd example :(

If I were you, let me put things into my perspective.

I seriously hated all did god damn mother fxxxxx drivers of puny cars on the rd.. They can driver damn slow and can't accelerate fast enough n expect we big cc cars to give way.. Give my ass man.. Eva once I went to Sungei kadut for wk on a sun morning, it was a single lane n Lotsa heavy vehicles traveling.. Imagine if an accident occurred? Jam the whole damn rd!! It's ok that they die as their cars are puny grocery getters that pay little road tax but it be serious when they affect the ppl that are going to dat industrial area to earn ther living.. Worst part, garment supports them.. Some ppl even paste the dads for life or baby on board sticker on their car n encouraging dis lame driving.. When dis video was posted, was hoping to see perhaps a trailer or Wat heavy vehicle fr our driven by our neighboring brothers give them a close near miss n sending them pissing their pants... Dat be fun!!

Anyway just FYI, I've cycled in MY. No stress at all. Drivers there have better road manners towards others than my fellow Singaporeans.

We have seen cars, bicycle, motorcycle, lorries, trucks, pedestrians beating the red lights.

Regardless of race, language or religion.

A few of these doesn't constitute the majority....I hope

There's no reason to stereotype and start saying nasty things about a certain group.

I drive, I cycle, I ride motorbike and I also walk.....where do I stand? Oh no :o

Lets put i this way. Historically, bicycles came first.

Also from your statements, I'm guessing you're encouraging commuter cyclists then. Good on you for encouraging others to using cycling as a form of transport. It should cut down on a lot of traffic congestion!

Another thread about cyclists on a car forum - so much angst amongst the drivers here!

I'm not a cyclist - but I don't mind sharing the roads.

Some of you complain about the dangerous riding on the video - and it's true - they are stupid - but at the same time, they won't be at the traffic lights when it turns green slowing you down - which in turn will also cause you to grumble!

Most of the cyclists I've seen are law-abiding - stay on the left lane close to the kerb - but motorists here seem to go out of their way to vent frustration for slowing down just a little bit - again - what is that extra 5 or 10 seconds - or even 5 minutes to you?

What will you achieve in 5 minutes - discover cold fusion - or discover a new porno website?

As much as some of you here wish death on some cyclists - I'm sure there are those who wish the same on certain drivers.

Actually besides what Nzy said, the condition of the park connector linking east coast to changi (and most others similarly) is pretty crap. Even if there was nobody else but me so I can go as fast as I wanted to, the likelyhood of getting into an accident is far higher than being on the coastal road itself.

As a cyclist, I don't condone beating the traffic light. I stop at traffic lights even wee hours in the morning where there's no cars. I've seen many cyclist like this and I believe majority of my fellow team mates are like this. I said majority because there always bound to be some bad apples. If we catch any of them, we will post in our own private forum and they will be warned. We will not allow them to join the rides if they continue to ignore the warnings.

Having said that, there are definitely cyclist on the roads that have terrible behavior. We have seen it before and fights have even broke out between cyclist because of these. Yes, these cyclist considered themselves pro level and have too much ego to stop because they want to be first.

I can see that there's a lot of negative sentiments towards cyclist and even some cursing and swearing that cyclist deserves to get killed. I hope this are limited to just aggression on the keyboard from you and not actual aggression towards cyclist on the road.
