Liping24cn Clutched July 13, 2012 Share July 13, 2012 Does the army or civil defense actively look out for someone who AWOL from NS? Will they stop looking for the guy after a few weeks? When will they give up looking for AWOL Could it be the one in charge did not follow procudure and become slack and did not discharge his duty to pursue AWOL pwrsonnel actively? I ask because the internet scam guy was AWOL for 18months, as reported in the news. Singapore is small, surely it's not dofficult to track down someone within a few days, as long as he is still in Singapore right? ↡ Advertisement
Nzy Twincharged July 13, 2012 Share July 13, 2012 (edited) I think as long as more than 21 days AWOL considered deserter already. They will try to go to his house and contact his relatives. If they don't go home or stay at any of their relative's homes, it will be hard to find them unless the guy stupid enough to go and work or unlucky enough to get seen by people who know him and they tip off the MP lo. Or if he goes overseas. IIRC my previous unit also have a guy who awol for more than 1 year and still not caught. Edited July 13, 2012 by Nzy
Donut Supercharged July 13, 2012 Share July 13, 2012 Yeah it's possible. So long as the guy doesn't go home or relatives home, he can hide forever without getting caught. Unless he's stupid to do illegal things, get caught by police, he can hide as long as he can If he goes overseas, better don't come back because the ICA system will know and trigger the custom officers and possibly MINDEF too Or in some cases, he's already sitting in police prison for some sentence. Zxcvb Turbocharged July 13, 2012 Share July 13, 2012 The issue here is, does SAF/SPF/CD actively go all out the apprehend desserters as much as a criminal on a wanted-list?? Seems like no combined effort is made to round up all these desserters and put them in cells. They can be out there working, doing illegal jobs, pedal drugs and so on. I think even if kenna screen by police, does the police have a computerised list of desserters names and ic on a list?? If going to Malaysia or traveling overseas, does ICA able to detect if this particular person is a desserter? My 2 cents.

Liping24cn Clutched July 14, 2012 Author Share July 14, 2012 Seems like a person who goes AWOL are usually problem child, from small issues can lead to illegal acts and no looking back serious crime. Thus if the system did not nip him early, the longer he is outside. He will take much risks and do risky things to sustain his life. And many others(gang boss manipulators) who knew about his status may use it against him, and get him to do more crazy things and indirectly control such AWOL people to commit crime and unsavoury matters. He claims he was working "proper jobs" doing that period and no effort was made to apprehend him. He also claims he got tired and surrendered himself, served some time in DB and was made to clear his NS liability.

Don't be crazy. Conscription is like rape. The governement forces you to serve under threat of violence. I salute those with the courage to go AWOL. Obleveonn 2nd Gear July 14, 2012 Share July 14, 2012 When I was in NS, the longest record held by a person who awol from my unit was 8 years! LOL... Its not difficult to run but more difficult to hide. One wrong turn and you will be arrested by the authorities. So yar, people can awol not just for 18 months but for years! Of course, if one should steal a rifle or sensitive documents, then the whole Singapore will be after one.

Was attached to MP command for a short time during NS and heard that they do go out occasionally to look for these AWOL personnel or deserters. But then they'll just go to their house or relative's house to check. As long as he hide in some other house they won't find him. I heard that the ICA will also have a list of deserters so as long as they don't leave the country or don't come back they won't get caught also lo.
