my understanding is that they are not even suppose to cycle 2 by 2.

ROAD TRAFFIC ACT

(CHAPTER 276, SECTION 140)

ROAD TRAFFIC (BICYCLES) RULES

8.

Every bicycle shall be ridden close to the left hand edge of the roadway and in such a manner as not to obstruct vehicles moving at a faster speed.

Have to read the whole thing to know that cyclists are allowed to cycle 2 abreast. Was personally told by a TP as well.

Sure and since you're on this, I propose this.

Since the weekend warriors want a bicycle lane. How about we further sub-divide the roads? Lane 4 for bus/lorries/commercial veh. Lane 3 for motorbikes, Lane 2 for cars up to 1.6L. Lane 4 for cars above 2.0L. Same for MRT train cabins.... Cabin 1 for chinese, Cabin 2 for malays, Cabin 3 for indian, Cabin 4 for PRCs, Cabin 5 for Pinoys, Cabin 6 for other races/nationalities. We could go on and on and on and on.

The point is, wanna use the road, accept the risk. The cyclists are already not required to take theory test or pay for the usage so what more they want?

It's the same as the argument on repealing section 377A, The more gay (cycling) activists push their agenda, he said, the stronger will be the push back from conservative forces (non-cyclists) in the society.

What is the point of doing that? The point of having a bicycle lane is so that drivers do not squeeze the cyclists out of the roads just because they think cyclists should not be on the roads. I don't think the other vehicles have problems with other vehicles trying to squeeze them off the road with the exception of the motorcycles. As for the train cabins, why would anybody want to do that? Just because you are racist?

IMO the govt won't ask cyclists to pay road tax probably cuz of a few reasons. Firstly, how are they going to determine who pays road tax? Everyone who owns a bicycle? Or those who cycle on the roads? If only those that cycle on the roads need to pay then how are they going to enforce?

Secondly, it will definitely help the traffic situation if more people cycle rather than drive. For me, on certain days I drive to work cuz I have to go elsewhere later. But for most of the days I cycle cuz its just alot faster. If they implement the cycling lanes, I guess more people will cycle to work as well.

Here's some other rules on cycling as stipulated in the Traffic Act. Now I'm curious how much of these rules does those weekend warriors know [rolleyes]

1. These Rules may be cited as the Road Traffic (Bicycles) Rules. Definitions.

2. In these Rules, unless the context otherwise requires

It's not about ME attitude but more of common sense and being reasonable.

Majority of these cyclist are just riding as a HOBBY and for that, they are asking for dedicated lanes, more protection etc? Hello... i think they should get their perspective right. There are other more urgent priorities out there for the government to look into.

Yes, someone died and it's unfortunate. But everyday, you have people dying from accidents (cars vs cars, motorbikes vs cars, cars vs pedestrians etc) so what makes these cyclists any special? Wanna ride on the road, then accept the risk that comes with it. Be responsible and culpable just like any other motorists. Frankly no amount of fancy LEDs, helmets, carbon fibre frames or even government ENDORSED regulations will save you if you choose to ride like an idiot.

So u personally feels that road protection and safety is not important?

Like i mention earlier, i do agree there are black sheeps around and they ride like idiots waiting to add on to the statistics, but i believe they do not represent the whole cycling community.

I believe its not about banning cyclists on the road or whatsoever, its about how to co-exists, how to promote more road awareness and safety. I am sure cyclists know the danger or riding on the road, but how to make it better and safer for everyone? The laws might not just be for cyclists, it could be for everyone and anyone!

Personally i feel a cycling lane is a far cry, and it wont be implemented, but i am sure more things can be done to ensure the safety of bikers.

Like one of the letters stated, if government can create a law to make it illegal for FDW to clean windows, why not spend abit of time for road safety?

That's true.

Plus I also don't understand why cyclists want to expose themselves to such risk.

Some roads are known to be busy and hectic, but cyclists die die must cycle there.

Actually most of the accidents are not on busy and hectic roads.

(2)No bicycle shall be ridden on the right of any two other bicycles proceeding abreast in the same direction except when overtaking such other bicycles or on parts of roads or paths set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles.

S 773/2004, wef 01/01/2005

So does this mean can cycle 2 abreast? and a 3rd one if he is overtaking?

those cyclists who demand their space on the road because it is their fugging hobby are just plain selfish and inconsiderate. just because of their hobby, other motorists have to accommodate them? i suggest that they reflect upon themselves on the way they behave on the roads before kpkbing about other motorists. i have seen them being a menace on the roads. if they are on a suicide mission, pls do not inconvenience other motorists and get others invovled thank u.

in summary i conclude that the more time they spent cycling on the roads, the lesser their intellect level.

So your reasons for not wanting cyclists on the roads are not selfish nor inconsiderate? So we don't see motor vehicle drivers with bad road behaviour? We don't see other motor vehicle drivers that are menaces or on suicide missions?

... but in cases where some tired drivers overlooked or distracted (ya, poor Singaporean working class not enough rest, need to work longer hours) and their responses were not as quick, WHAM!

This is exactly why bicycle lanes are needed.

You are incorrect. According to the law "Every bicycle shall be ridden close to the left hand edge of the roadway and in such a manner as not to obstruct vehicles moving at a faster speed."

It is the cyclist who are NOT to obstruct vehicles, not the other way round.

As long as the drivers can overtake its not an obstruction.

Yes. This was what I was told. Just like motorcycles. Motorcycles also supposed to be 2 motorcycles abreast for the lane. If you noticed the learner bikes they always travel two abreast as well.

What is the point of doing that? The point of having a bicycle lane is so that drivers do not squeeze the cyclists out of the roads just because they think cyclists should not be on the roads. I should be the one asking you instead.

And I'm not racist. I'm just applying the same logic as yours. Since by giving cyclists a dedicated lane would solve the conflict, then I propose that different races/nationalities should have different train compartments too. In fact, we can even further drill down and have some sections which are for the needy/pregant/old folks. Like that, everyone will be happy!

Since we're on this, how about we further divide the bike lane into sub-lanes. Then we can have small kids on their training bikes, teenagers on their cheap aleoca MTs, OLs on their Tokyo bikes, yuppies on their Cannondale etc.

Wait, I hear lotsa of toddlers are not happy that they can't zoom on their kick scooter on the pavement. How how? I think the best way is to write an open letter to Tuck Yew and LHL to request for a skating lane.

Cyclist really should understand that they should ride to the left on a single file.

The poor car on the right had to almost drive onto the kerb to avoid him.

Read and look. What all but one of the cyclists are doing is 100% legal. What the guy that went out did though illegal was at his own peril to look after the safety of his fellow riders.

i will love to see a few cyclist kick your car because your car is blocking his way and cause some dents.

by then i will see if you still love cyclist coz you can't claim insurance against them.

wkakaka

Errm if anyone kicks a car in your scenario, the driver can't claim insurance. It will have to be a civil suit as its not an accident.

anyway we have a World Class Transport System who can bring anyone to anywhere within a reasonable time.

so the garman should ban bicycle from the road till our Highly Paid Ministesr think of how to solve this issue (eg build bigger road).

those who want to ride bicycle can ride in the park for leisure. those who think that the cycle track in the park is too bouncy, please pond your money and build a bicycle racing track since you want to cycle damm fast.

Bicycle bang bicylce at most a bruise here and there.

Bicycle bang car maybe get a broken hand or leg if lucky but better bring a big plastic bag along with you so that the car driver can cover the cyclist with it.

Bicyle bang lorry no need to say maybe can use the big plastic bag to collect all the broken parts.

Let me guess. You're an EDMW regular... Are you sure times are reasonable when I can get around faster during peak hours on my bicycle than driving my car?

Another problem is Traffic Police. They should come up with a proper set of rules and regulations to remind cyclists and drivers of what are the rights and wrongs. By keeping quiet, the cyclists nowadays are just taking things for granted and gone too far now.

Education is an issue ATM. The rules are regulations other than bicycle specific ones are exactly the same.

That being said TP and LTA have been on the ball recently at getting cyclists off footpaths.

Well we'll see how 377A turns out since its going on trial for possibly being unconstitutional [:p]

Don't we already have bus lanes anyway? Now that is a lane for convenience.
