at the end of the day what qualitative gain are there?

engine flush or not

add cleaner additives or not

with or without both cars still run until scrap

the added expenses is it worth it?

is it for most of us it is often a mental feel goodis exercise

I think most are device by entrepreneurs

My previous ride, Toyota vios, drove till last 9.5 years, fc still damn good. Never flushed at all. 15km/l... Fuel simi. Waste money.

My previous car.

I knew a driver whose car had an engine which I think was the same as mine.

He used a very popular engine oil and added an engine oil additive.

He had very good FC.

He also had a "golden" engine caused by varnish.

I had used the same popular engine oil before.

I had mild varnish which was detected from my "golden" dipstick.

It eventually went away.

I used to have varnish, slight sludging, dirty throttle body (every 30-40k) and leaky engine top cover. .

I contemplated to use engine flush to do some cleaning.

Eventually, after much experiment, I did not need to.  This is what I did :-

Every tank I use a fuel with PEA.

Every 5000km,  I use a PEA based fuel system cleaner.

Evert 10,000km,  I use an ester based engine oil which has good cleaning properties.

Just to add, I recall any driver who also had a "golden" dipstick.

The issue went away because he used a pureplus engine oil which has good cleaning properties.

can share whats a pureplus engine oil and what brand are those?

I only know previous a certain racing engine oil had a bad reputation of causing oil gasket failure. But they have since improved on it.

AFAIK,  pureplus engine oil are derived from natural gas.

The brands I know are Shell Helix Ultra and Pennzoil.  They have pureplus on the bottle.

Which brand is the racing engine oil ?

Depending on the application,  racing EO have less or no detergent.

What's your mileage at the end?

Hi all, i saw that some have mentioned about using mineral oil to run for 1000km to clean the engine. May I know what brand and weight do you use? I saw on lazada msia only got 10w-30 or 20w-50.

That's the correct way to clean your engine.

Weight should be specified in your owners manual.

You don't need a flush if you have been using good quality synthetic oil.

Take a look at what happen after using Pennzoil Ultra for 1000 mile, works as advertised.

And any brand of engine oil is good enough - no need to get branded ones.

Engine oil all come from the same source.

German made Schnell at $30 for 4 litres is good enough. better to use this cheap engine oil and change every 5,000km, than to use an expensive branded engine oil like Mobil 1 that costs almost triple the price and change oil every 10,000km.

I half agree bro. I agree that changing oil often makes a significant difference. In Taiwan, they change oil every 4000-5000km, even if they are using synthetic. That's why their cars can still be running smoothly after 20 years (we only need 10 years though).

As for oil source...

Lubricants got two main components - base oil and additives. Two oils can be fully synthetic (dependent on base-oil), and cost can still be dramatically different because of the additives used. And because different additives have a different make-up of materials, the wrong additives can damage your car.

If you are driving an Asian make, still not so bad. But if you are driving Conti, best to check for the various approval ratings on the oil. Got difference one. If you try Brand X and it seems fine for a few months, that's normal, because damage only surfaces years after. And the costs incurred due to engine damage a bit hard to project, if not can do a comparison to see whether the pros outweigh the cons.

My take is that it's most important that my car can reliably start and go as and when I need it to. Otherwise, I wouldn't have plonked in the money to get one, but just Grab or Uber all the way.

i used an inexpensive Mobil mineral oil for this purpose. the oil's viscosity to use is largely dependent on the type of engine you have.

Why is there a vast difference in prices between Shell oil sold in Giant and official distributors? Is it because of the additives used?

i think no one can prove this about the addictives.

Sometimes this happens because of parallel imports in large quantities. Often times dealers (local and overseas) and distributors have 'quota' to meet. In the event that they cannot sell enough, they release the goods to willing buyers (usually overseas) in bulk. In order to achieve this, they sell mostly to break even, so it's substantially cheaper.

Then the local buyer/parallel importer sells these in bulk to Giant and/or other supermarkets at a cheap price, so that they would move, making a small profit.
