Hi all,

Would appreciate if any bro/sis here know where can I buy/rent wheelchair for short term use. Also, as I'm staying at those old HDB flat where there are steps in frnot of the main door. Will need to get a ramp for the wheelcahir to get in & out of the house, as well as the toilet. Your advise & help is much appreciate. Thank you

you can check with the hospital if they have any for rent. Also there is always a pharmacy within the hospital if you need to buy one.

You wont know how long she is gonna use it, renting would cost you more den buying those made in China or Taiwan made (ard 200-300) get those small which the handler could handle, your mum might need it in the future and can be tucked away easily.

Get a carpenter to customize those ramps, wood is cheaper den metal. Thats your mum, spend it.

Thanks bro:)

I'm thinking of renting the wheelchair instead of buying, as she will be able to walk after undergoing physiotherapy. May oso need to get a bed for her as well. Am more concern about the accessing to the house. Any ideas where can I get those ramp. Thank you.

Last time I borrow from a temple. That one is old type made of solid steel, very heavy to manouver in the house, returned it and bought new one for my FIL. After he passed on we donated it to a hospice. A new one cost around 200+ I think. There's a shop at the end of a hawker centre at bukit merah central that sells wheelchairs and stuff for special needs. Dunno got rental service.

Hospice got a lot, usually ppl donate one. But whether you all dare to use or not is another issue.

For ramps and installation of toilet handle bar look for your neighbourhood plumber/handyman.

Hi KaKiLang,

If you want to rent, theres a association for the handicap at Whampoa Drive opp the hawker center, they operate 9-6pm, should be very cheap and take it as a donation to them and make ramps that can be tuck away so you wont get it wet. I think theres a malay guy at that association that helps to make wooden ramps at a very small cost too.

Cheers

Is she going to stay at community hospital for rehab? My mom stayed a total of abt 2 months in hospital and rehab hospital, so I'm quite surprised that ur mom is returning so quickly.

Other changes required include support handle in toilet and walking aid. Avoid using wheelchair so that she can build up the muscles.

You may need to change the height of chairs and beds so that it'll be easier for her to get up and down.

Full recovery is ard 6 months after surgery.

Agree, never get them idle when they are still capable. Sad to see a lot of lots of elder looks capable using motorised wheelchairs.

+1

the moment laziness sets in.. they make wheelchairs their legs.. more problems follow.

anyway, if u thinking of renting, might as well buy from cash convertor.

you can actually check with the hospital.

my mum did a similiar operation few months back and the nurse did give her an option of leasing the wheelchair but she decline.

the hospital was TTSH.

anyway, you can check with salvation or some old folks home, tell them your situation.

likely they will T loan you FOC.

probably at the end of the lease, buy something as a gesture of goodwill or token.

There is one shop at the bukit merah hawker center, right at the back where the delicious 'Day Night' fried kwey tiao stall is.

Rental stuff is usually dirty and worn.

Buy new chair is better, as you can donate it away in future. Get the chair that got hole in center so can shiet easier.

The ramps easy to get a carpenter to make. Just do a few sketch of the various location and indicate the height.

If you r good with saw and nails, you can even go IKEA to buy some wooden planks and do some ramps yourself.

Hope the surgery is smooth and successful.

Take note that wheelchair with compact small wheels needs someone to push her around,as she can't reach the small wheels.

Rent from hospital

buy secondhand from salvation army thrift store.

hi, as per my last experience with my late sister, your mom wont be walking so fast - my sister took 3 months before she can walk thus I think you will need the wheelchair for a while. For my late sister, the hospital gave her a pamphlet where she get special discounts on the various items she need during recuperation - you should check with the hospital. There are also 2nd hand wheelchair at Rehab Mart - Pearl Center (next to Outram mrt)

i rented before at CGH hospital. Paid about S$120. Find it not worth it.

Cos required to sit for another 2-3months. In the end, purchase a NEW one at around S$300 at CGH hospital pharmacy.

Once recovered, I donated the wheelchair to the old home.
