This teaches the teachers to keep to their job scope don't think they are some holy people ...

Maybe you do not have any friends or family in teaching line?

If not, you would understand the pressure of teaching kids of this era...especially from EM3...

You need to ensure your student behaviour too...not just teach...and there's lots more complaining parents nowadays and mostly over very minute stuff...

one of my friends, a teacher, lost his temper in class and grabbed a sec3 pai kia by his collar and shook him up.

the student's offence was while being disciplined, he had cursed the teacher and his family, loudly, in front of the whole class. Also made repeated references to a particular body part of the teacher's mom.

student complained, and the teacher was made to resign.

stories like these made me ashamed to admit i'm part of an advanced species.

MOE should start installing camera with sound recording function in school to protect the teacher and student just like our car cam.

My dad as an OM of some sec sch ever had a student challenge him and even start to be physical, he pin him down with his knees on his back, police was called and the student was detained.

Using vulgarities on teacher should be dealt with seriously but the teacher was forced to resign, that is why more and more student don't care and start doing the same thing.

so as a teacher, best to just teach, go thru motion, dont bother much about the students?

like that, teaching will be just a job, to earn salary. however without passion, teaching cannot last long.

i worked as an IT trainer before n stationed in a sec sch, after 1 yr, i quit cos i cant teach and also cant handle the rowdy students. LOL

Honestly I would t allow a 20+ year old "teach" my kid how to be a "person" unless the teacher has got their own kids and have lived life and know life ...

Like that all teachers must be 50 years and above

on point 2, yes i agree to certain extent they need to notify the parents. However, this is not the first incident in singapore over the years.

What i see here could be the form teacher 'overly' concern for the student as the exam was in one hour time, the exam is conducted by teachers from other school hence she maybe worried they will be penalised them on the appearance, hence decide to trim their hair.

What did the parents of the other two students say? were they as angry as the Mdm Ong? or they probably thanks the teacher that the kids did not miss the exam?

we have keypoh teachers, bo chup teachers, mean teachers and some psycho ones, so be thankful if someone actually bother about your kids if the parents dun bother at all, or maybe they bother whether the son hairstyle looks like the latest korean singer <_<

I agree with your point. So I suppose this "haircut" issue is nationwide and this is one of the "black sheep" that did not follow the regulations.

I meant that if the parent/child does not respond to the letter, they must call before attempting to take physical action. And also, at least have the decency to send to a proper barber.

So to summarise, I have pointed out 2 points for improvement by the school/teacher:

(1) The letter must be sent out much earlier to give advance notice (but the boy did not give the letter to the mother - their fault)

(2) They should have notified the parent before taking action.

Schools are not supposed to expel students now no matter how naughty the students are. If the students are kicked out of school, they have nothing to do and commit crimes, it becomes a social problem. So the schools are expected to keep the students in school, and try all ways to change their behaviour. The Principals have to answer for their attrition rate. I heard of one case whereby a naughty student was expelled from school and the parent went to the MP, after that, the school had to take the student back.

I think this is a lose-lose situation for all those involved.

The Principal didn't support her teacher, it'll affect staff morale.

The teacher didn't handle the situation well, it'll affect her appraisal.

The mother made a fool of herself. How would her colleagues, friends and relatives view her?

The boy is now famous for the wrong reason. How would his future school teachers view him? I'm sorry to say that he looks naughty enough.

too harsh??? you should hear my story..... I kena cut hair during the morning assembly, in front of thousand over plp.... teacher some more purposely make it terrible so that parents could see.... when go home, kena wrack by mother....

But I think that should be the way.... nowadays, teachers cant do anything. Even students try to be funny, they only LL. How does the teacher gg to teach?? like that we will only produce a bunch of monkey....

i agree with you. lots of parents don't want their kids to "suffer" but actually such minute doses of suffering makes their kid a better man.

how can the teacher instil discipline if every matter also need to give face to parent and kid. in this case, the choice was between no exam or hair cut. clearly the teacher choose the better choice for the kid.

Rules and regulations of the school has to be observed. The boy was already given a warning letter to cut his hair and he did not do so. Still, the teacher should not have cut his hair but should have sent him to the nearest barber to have his hair cut under supervision. If he is late for his exam, then the invigilators could exercise flexibility in allowing him extra time.
