How do we know which gear we are in for cars with auto-transmission?

 

Curious to know . . . . thanks!

For those cars not equipped with a current gear indicator, can only do one thing. Count the shifts when moving off from stationary.

if it is very coarse\rough and pulling power is strong, it is in first or second gear, if it is very smooth it is in high (fourth or fifth) gear. anything else is in between, i.e. 3rd gear. Can ?

There's no gear in CVT. So, good luck to your counting if you're driving one.

Just push the lever over to manual, will display the gear you are in.
