Beckham to train with Arsenal

January 28, 2013

By ESPN staff

David Beckham is to train with Arsenal from Tuesday as he builds up his fitness before deciding which club he will join, the Gunners have confirmed.

David Beckham won back to back MLS titles before quitting Los Angeles Galaxy

Beckham is a free agent after winding down his contract with LA Galaxy but has been in no rush to make a decision on where he will play. As he is out of contract he does not have to sign for a club by Thursday's transfer deadline.

He recently moved in to a house in London with his wife and children, fuelling speculation that he would be looking to play in England.

The likes of Queens Park Rangers and West Ham have expressed an interest in the 37-year-old, and now Arsenal have been added to the list of clubs who could sign the former England skipper. Monaco have been very strongly linked with Beckham, as well as AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, plus clubs from Australia and Brazil.

The Sun initially broke the story and reported a 'plan' had been hatched for him to train with the Gunners, with an insider quoted as saying Beckham wanted this kept "hush hush".

The report states Beckham will arrive for training on Tuesday morning with the intention of proving to Gunners boss Arsene Wenger that he can still operate at the highest level. But if Beckham wants regular first-team football in the twilight of his career it is difficult to see Arsenal being able to offer this.

Indeed, speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Wenger said: "He (Beckham) has asked to come here and work on his fitness. He has not done anything for a long time. He called me. It is purely for fitness. There is no speculation of signing him or anything."

Wenger: Barca won't sell Villa

January 29, 2013

By ESPN staff

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that Barcelona have no intention of selling striker David Villa.

Villa has been linked with a move to the Premier League

The Gunners have been linked with making a move for Villa in the current transfer window as they look to bolster their attacking options.

However, when speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Wenger said he has "enough quality strikers" while confirming the Spain international is not for sale.

Wenger said: "Barcelona do not want to sell David Villa. They've made that very clear."

When asked if there is there any room for negotiation with Barca over Villa, the Frenchman replied: "No."

Wenger also suggested he is happy with his current options up front, adding: "What's important is to buy players who can strengthen the squad. Otherwise, you do nothing. We have enough quality strikers."

Barcelona's assistant coach Jordi Roura confirmed that the Spanish league leaders have no intention of selling the 31-year-old, whose third child was born on Monday.

"I have nothing on this," roura said in his press conference ahead of Barca's Copa del Rey match against Real Madrid on Wednesday. "Villa is our player and he will be until the end of the season."

Arsenal currently have former England captain David Beckham training with the club, as the midfielder looks to work on his fitness.

Henry: Arsenal return never on cards

January 29, 2013

By Kevin Palmer

Thierry Henry has insisted he never came close to signing another loan deal with Arsenal during this January transfer window and has admitted last year's temporary stint back at the club came as a surprise to him.

Henry was linked with a third stint at Arsenal

Arsenal's record scorer Henry was widely expected to sign another short-term deal with the club as he trained with Arsene Wenger's squad following the end of the MLS season with New York Red Bulls last November.

But Henry, who was recently linked with support for a possible takeover of the club by billionaire Alisher Usmanov, stresses he never came close to a third stint under Wenger's command.

"It was never in the air (that I would return), despite the speculation," Henry said in an interview with Al Jazeera.

Big match tonight, with both teams gunning for the UCL spot, the stake will be high.

Key advantage to Liverpool is Arteta is out. Both playing similar passing football and midfield battle will determine the outcome.

Hoping for a high scoring entertaining football match. May the better team win. :)

Btw, Beckham looks good in the arsenal training kit. Should consider signing him and get his sons into the academy too. Lol

If offered a point before the match, I would have grabbed. But to lose a 2-0 lead, is kind of disappointed.

That said, on the balance of play, draw is a fair result.

Ars 2-2 Liv

Gunners battle back for point

Theo Walcott's strike sealed a share of the spoils for Arsenal

Arsenal fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Liverpool in a thrilling Premier League clash at Emirates.

Both sides knew defeat could prove fatal to their hopes of closing back up on the top four, but neither looked ready to settle for anything other than all three points in an open and entertaining match.

Liverpool took an early lead through Luis Suarez after terrible defending by Arsenal, and then looked to be in complete control when Jordan Henderson walked in a second on the hour.

However, as so often in a frustrating season, the Gunners suddenly burst into life as in-form Olivier Giroud reduced the deficit with a close-range header and Theo Walcott then rattled in an equaliser.

There were more chances at each end, but defeat for either side would have been an injustice.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers had recalled his regulars, making seven changes from the side humiliated at Oldham in the FA Cup on Sunday.

It was a bright start by the Reds, their travelling support displaying a banner protesting against the infamous
