Turbocharged

This is a kungfu movie without much kungfu actions. Pace is very slow, typical Wong Kar Wai films. You've been warned.

Saw the show last night. Ok leh. A lot of technical aspect and philosophy on Wingchun but it's not boring.

It's typical of the director's style. It's not as brutish as the fighting style portrayed in Donnie's Ip Man series. But I think the lead actor Tony is not convincing as a martial arts master. He looks too petite and his skinny arms dun help.

Overall I give 3.5 stars out of 5. Not a bad show considering they put a lot of time in research on the main character. My only grouse is the lead actor who suck in the show.

It is a very well researched movie, several times more than Ip Man 1 and 2 or those Ip Man variants.

"The Grandmasters" is a tribute to all great chinese martial arts masters spanning 1930-1950s.

The usual wkw's unrequited love, melancholy, symbol of time.... signature style is still there.

Btw, all leading actors/ actresses spent 3 years to train on their respective martial arts' form.

THR: Can The Grandmaster also be seen as a chronicle of how Hong Kong became what it is, given that it ends with all the martial arts experts settling in the city and becoming part of its urban fabric?

Wong: That

It is more like a love story. Both loved each other but the situation doesn't allow their love to blossom.

Use to read a comic series tat depicted 李書文 and 劉雲樵. Hope they do this grandmaster too. Baji was selected for bodyguards for its explosive power and ability to bring down enemies fast.

this is the documentary of how the film was research and produced, see how hard the actor trained...

WKW has been drawn too deep into the history and make it a documentary instead of a movie.

once is enough......by this direrctor.

the last time i watched his movie was 东邪西毒

Oh yes! 东邪西毒, not like the HK 射雕英雄 we used to watch as a kid..

A lot of talking, stylo shots. It's nice as an "Art Film", but in case you guys dunno about this movie yet (English name : Ashes Of Time), you should have heard their movie soundtrack being overused in dramas and even some other movies. The music was (still is) Fantastic !!

Sorry to sidetrack .. supposed to be discussing about The GrandMaster .. [blush]

Anyone watched this?

If you are expecting Donnie Yen style of Ip man, you can forget about watching this. Donnie Yen kungfu background is the extreme opposite of Wing Chun.

The fighting scene probably only about 15% of the whole movie, and it is not all about Ip man, and it is also a love/romance story....

and for those who know Wong Kar Wai's movie, you are allow to sleep in the cinema in between the show but please dun snore [laugh] [laugh]

my fav wong kar wai movie... in the mood for love and 2046. Fanastic movies!

When i was young, "art film" = R(A). Back then, R(A) was the term used.

I remember The Unbearable Lightness of Being was one of them and it had a pretty long run here in the local cinemas.

what kinda martial arts film only has 15% of fight scenes...

This the one that tony leung was badly injured and so exhausted that he has to take a long break from filming? If so, then really wasted his efforts with such poor review of the show..

if you are just expecting non stop kungfu actions from Wong kar wing movie then u will be seriously disappointed....all of his movies are about the beautiful camera angles and the sensual lighting which translates the feelings and bring forth the blues in the movies. Try watching his masterpieces like 2046 and in the mood for love.
