COE vs Engine BHP

What's the purpose of having COE - to control the population of vehicles in SG.

Still, we have many vehicles on the roads. However, just think again, our roads condition can be as worst as Bangkok if we didn't introduce the coe system since '90.

COE base on Horsepower is promoting more people to own small cars and jam up our roads.

In SG - have money then buy car, no money then take public transport, simple and easy, that's it!

The higher the COE prices, the better. Don't agree with me, yes, I know and nevermind, this is just my personal view.

understand,

car owner group like a board floating on sea, once you climb on the board, you don't expect others on the borad to crowd you, but those who still struggling in the sea will be another feeling [:p]

COE was introduced to control car ownership by quota. Every car takes a certain space on the road. If there is any adjustment to the system, it should be based on size. That is why motorcycle is in another Cat. LTA also assume in general a higher c.c. car is bigger so they separated the Cat.

In any capitalist society there is a pecking order of the Rich and Poor. Can afford buy. If cannot afford then choose the next affordable option. This is very simple but today the people just cannot come to reality and accept the fact that they did not work smart (or hard) enough to keep themselves abreast with inflation. Many also borrow all the way to keep up with the Jones while another group is plain just lazy/choosy on jobs.

This fact is hard to swallow.

Size, emission, MPGs (Fuel economy) are the only ones that make sense, with the latter 2 help reducing pollution, any other suggestions are like people wanted a system that benefit them as buyers or dealers.

The latter 2 suggestion are also better, as people may want bigger cars to ferry more people.

You can bid COE as per normal, but apply discount or penatity by % points base on say fuel economy.

IMO, physical size should be used for road tax, whereas emissions should be used for COE. That would be somewhat fair. For cases like big cars with small engines. Give them lower COE, but tax them more for physical size on the road.

Very simple la.

Just come out with a law that all current COED cars have to be scrapped and all red plates all need to convert to normal plate.

But gov can give chance, old cars owners all have to convert to classic plate with 28 days allowance on the road.

Red plate, give you +5 more years for repayment of outstanding amount.

COE price is the result of supply and demand of COEs in the market.

It is like share price, with COE prices bidded up by dealers.

Low COE price also means there are lots of new COEs floating around, potentially jamming up the roads.

Tighten COE supply and circulation means price goes sky high.

This is easy to understand.

Fewer COEs = less congested roads. This is what the govt aims to achieve.

These folks are barking up the wrong tree.

I was about to post something like this, but you saved me the trouble.

COE price is a simple matter of the tension between supply and demand.

Cutting the COE quota will cause the price to shoot up. Just levying a fixed increase in COE prices does nothing useful except enriching government coffers. People who want the COE price to go up in order to control the car population are mixing up cause and effect.

The real mystery is why noone has taken the gahmen to task for keeping the ARF and import duties on cars instead of letting the COE quota system absorb these "naturally". The only purpose the ARF etc. are serving now is letting the gahmen earn a nice baseline bonus on every car that enters Sg, independent of the COE. The COE is the variable windfall for the gahmen.

should make a coe that keep low omv cars out of sight in sg, traffic jam will drop significantly, & fix taxi limit to 70kph too, last is get rid of opc cars
