A pinafore /ˈpɪnəfɔər/ (colloquially a pinny /ˈpɪni/ in British English) is a sleeveless garment worn as an apron.

That caught my attention. Pinafore, sweet innocent faces, convent girls. Who has not been punctual to the bus stop to catch the same bus as that girl in pinafore? It was a ritual of growing up, an icon of raging hormones and an indication that we were growing up healthy.

An ex-classmate started a group chat yesterday. "Hi, you guys want to catch a show?" I was thinking what exactly he meant. Porn? No, we don't share that anymore. It is just not us to catch a show anymore. After a few caustic and sarcastic remarks, just like 20 odd years ago, we realized he meant exactly what he meant. To catch a show, just a the bunch of us, just like what we used to do. We'll probably have Burger King too, just because we can.

The Show: That Girl In Pinafore. Local production featuring local cast. Abundance of Xinyao littering the entire film. Normally I would say "No". But I guess I had my share of giant robots and flying dudes. So we agree that we shall catch a show. That is if we somehow manage to get our timing correct.

There are times when we take a step backwards and re-examine the small things that has passed us by, however minute and um-important. Then we step out again on our journey, knowing that it was the small little things that made us who we are today.

And I will be watching this show. Just because I can.

《我的朋友,我的同学,我爱过的一切》That Girl in Pinafore is a coming-of-age film from Singapore set in 1993 about dreams, friendships and first love.

The story follows a group of teenagers' efforts to bring business back to a struggling folk music pub, and the blossoming love between them.

1992, Singapore is on the cusp of having the first elected President, and has just banned chewing gum. There is an air of hope and rejuvenation in the air, where everyone believes a Singaporean dream is possible. There's a bunch of young people who are creating unique Singaporean music known as 'xinyao' and creating plenty of local works at a crazy pace. This is also the time where music cafes/lounges featuring local talents sprouted everywhere alongside a new trend called karaoke.

Jiaming is a free spirited lad who has never taken school seriously. His parents own a music lounge called "Meng Chuan", and feels he could help run the business if he not for school. True enough, his 'O' level results bombs...

Jiaming has a bunch of buddies named Caogen, Haoban and Xiaopang who scored well enough to move on to Junior College. But they are caught renting porn magazines by the Principal and are suspended for a month.

During this month, the 4 boys take part in a local music competition, have their first taste of love, and work hard to bring business back to "Meng Chuan". This coming of age tale, sees Jiaming and gang learning the harsh realities of the real world; and finding out that choosing between what your heart wants and what the society expects from you, is akin to losing your innocence in an adult world.

Through Meng Chuan's struggle, the film reflects the eventual demise of the 'Xinyao' (Singapore Chinese folk music) movement around the mid-90s. And signifies a losing of innocence in youth's struggle to battle the realities of growing up.

THAT GIRL IN PINAFORE 《我的朋友,我的同学,我爱过的一切》is the first Singapore film in 15 years to celebrate the success of 'Xinyao'( 新谣), the popular 90s Singaporean folk music movement. The film re-introduces this music with contemporary arrangements to a new generation in this charming teenage love story.

"That Girl In Pinafore", is a tribute to those who had a 'Singaporean dream' and fought for what they believed it. In spite of the environment that they were in, they pursued their heart regardless of what their head tells them, regardless of the social expectations. Hopefully, this coming of age tale that is based on "Xinyao" can touch and inspire more people to listen to the music in their hearts.

Taiwanese actresses also old (in age) for their roles, but the main issue is they DONT look old and out of place for the roles... ours?... hahahaha :o

Even from the trailer, I can see that the show is not very authentic or well-researched when it comes to realism. This is supposed to be the early 90s?? Maybe can bluff the 'strawberry' generation lah, but not those who really were teens during that period!

Actor/actress look too old to be JC-age, and hairstyles / grooming way too modern. Some of the electronic gadgets (seen in the trailer) are also too modern to fit in the early 90s...

First thought also same thing. Probably rather similar to 那些年 but I was hoping the xinyao could make up for it.

And yes, i typed it. Any problem? <_<

I think actor's age in a movie really cannot be helped at times. Michelle Chen was lates 20ish when acting as:

Hollywood actors routinely play characters who really should be half their age.

On more earthly matters, the pinafore may be an iconic school uniform but I was never quite attracted to school girls wearing it. Partly because it is mostly worn by young kids and partly because I find CHIJ girls to be very one kind. The white top JC uniforms are nicer imo. Maybe because the wearers already 18 and blossom into flower.

However, this one is still the champion of school uniforms.

it was a bit serious and 有墨水! doesn't sound like a bear [laugh] [laugh]

nothing wrong with the songs and i believe viewer will also agree with the stories in the movie which remind them of their time in school.

however, the cast are the familiar faces make it a bit commercial which defeat the purpose of shooting a story of the innocent years :D

Bro, you watch the movie already ? Not nice ? 那些年 don't have Xinyao leh. Maybe you mean riding on the "那些年" wave ? Like the casino and gangster wave of the 90s ?

I'm quite looking forward to it, because I was quite impressed by the last movie by this director leh.

the funny thing is when they interview the director, he mentioned the young cast (Gen Y or strawberry) had never heard of those songs before [:/] [:/]
