Turbocharged

I remember some years ago when our northern neighbour promoted their tanjong pelepas port that threatened to draw away some business from our port here (and indeed, some major companies did make the move...). And now, look how it has turned out? They simply did not have the quality of the workforce and organisation to match up.

are you sure, or just being singaporean banging on about how we're all superior to anyone else.

go to mmc website and look at their latest financial report and expansion plans.

i've worked on a project with some of their fellas. They're just as competent as we are, with a bit more commonsense and humility.

at the moment, sg and china are probably the only countries in the world that could plan very far ahead and passes unpopular policy.

Every time I drove past Tanjong Pagar, I see those cranes like not moving, no loading or unloading of containers, no ships. I wonder if PSA business still that good.

if you can see the cranes moving, you wont be here typing, you probably need the services of Radx

yes... i find that compared to 10 yrs ago.. the workforce now has less common sense and indignity. Ppl do things to "cover" their own axx , sometimes it makes no sense to do things in that way..Everything is abt black & white. No one can trust promises like before.

It's the fault of KPIs, and its wrong emphasis and implementation. Everyone just want to have a nice report card every month, every quarters and every year. Nobody gives a sh1t on how others are doing; all do things and live in their own silos.

KPI is not at fault. it never was, KPI is a good thing. its the individual that do not dare to take up responsiblities that is the problem.

it's how much ppl value trust. Last time if you flip prata, whether or not black and white, bosses will penalised you for not making it clear to the other person or ensure that the other person is on the same page.

Now , if you flip prata, your boss will ask you if you keep b&w of the agreement. If yes, they will hamdum the other guy. The fault now lies with the other person who does not keep b&w on the agreement.

Agree. PSA's efficiency and transparency is something new set ups cannot match in years to come, like Hong Kong.

To add on

Shipping is not just having the vessel carry the goods from point A to B.

There's also logistical hubbing, consolidation and distribution involved. A ship is just like a bus. The goods like passengers.

Passengers do not always head for the same destination. However, you can safely and mostly assume they are headed somewhat in the same direction. So if you have a ship leaving from China to US, you would have most goods on it headed to US. But there are other goods which might be heading to Europe etc. So this is where a good port like Singapore comes in.

When the ship stops here, the containers are unloaded and then loaded onto different ships. Just like how passengers get off at certain stops to catch another bus.

So the real competition isnt really so much on the route. The focus is more on the type of services and how reliable the port is. But on the flip side, good reliable services are pointless when you don't have ships coming to you. So in a way, we're also very lucky to be strategically located. This part is really really heng!

As people progress and become more educated, this is the direction we will go.

its like every single email is a contract now. you have to be careful what you write even in email.

*sigh* ... singaporean supremacy at work again. China market and other developing mkt will eventually catch up with us in service. With new route, eventually sg will be abandon in global shipping..

Throughout history , so many transport hubs abandon due to changing routes. It really does not matter if there are better service in these hubs.. Eventually someone along the new route will raise up and take its place. It almost destined that in 20-30 yr, sg port will not be essential to global trading.

It's not the supremacy mentality lah.

It is something which worked for us and we excelled in it. But of cos to sit and relaz and feel shiok about it is wrong. We must always improve on our advantage.

this is only true if you work in a company with no clear indication of roles of each department.

Something, you cannot change, a lemon is a lemon .. no matter how hard you disguise it.

Shipping routes is longer is longer..really does not matter what sg do.

it still does. shipping is not just about route distant. safety aspect. temperature and weather also play an important parts as all these impact the ship and goods.

The "Northeast Passage" is in blue.

The maiden voyage to Europe by a Chinese merchant ship through the "Northeast Passage" will help the world's biggest exporter speed goods to market and is a symbol of Beijing's strategic ambitions in the Arctic.

No wonder they are one of the biggest contributors to the global warming... got hidden agenda one...
