Nlatio Turbocharged February 11, 2014 Share February 11, 2014 Wrong. They tried squeezing. Did not work. Even without the LNG setup we have now, they failed squeezing us. They have not tried it since. And Singapore has the upper hand when the contract ends since SLNG setup is almost completed. Its a winning situation for us. The prices of NG can only go lower then. But till then they can always shut off the taps. Are you willing to send your kids to open back those taps? I think paying will still be cheaper. They can... but at this point, dont think they will.... $$$$ do wonders..... ........ nobody will want to become enemy of God Of Fortune.... ↡ Advertisement

The one controlling the Natural gas pipeline is different from the one naming the ships. Don't see them working together to get the moolah. Too far away physically and too diferrent functionality in their depts. Up to a point $$ cannot grease them esp when it comes to public knowledge. From now onwards Singapore will be playing it low-key as they now know that theyre getting nowhere with throwing tantrums wrt the Indonesians. PAP silent wish is that it will blow over quickly. And paper Generals will look like boyscouts. By tmr MSM will be silent.

Susacarimakan 4th Gear February 11, 2014 Share February 11, 2014 ...just read this thread and wondered...was the reaction thought through or was it deliberate? What would the old guards have done? Could there have been face saving win-win outcome for both sides? Who is to know? Did asked myself though...what would I say if I was in a position to suggest?....maybe this... Instead of cancelling the meeting and uninviting the Indo Naval bossman plus the 100+ fries (thereby losing about 100+ room-nights for our hotels...damn!), have them meet and perhaps suggest politely/diplomatically/tactfully that Indo now has this rare opportunity to emulate our former PM's act of statesmanship (I remember LKY dropping tears decades ago and Mahathir did a re-run)...i.e. convince their Naval chief to spread flower petals at the graves of our 3 victims who perished in the act of violence, plus a meeting with the injured and the affected families at the same time to express condolences (-face saving...not expressing regret nor acknowledge/admit wrong doing) thereby reciprocating LKY and Singapore's magnanimity. Afterwhich, have our President award the Indo Naval chief a high enough honour plus pin a medal, for healing/fostering/maintaining/reinforcing the friendliness of the 2 peoples (President's fair day's work for his fair day's pay, right?)...etc...etc..., concluding with PM statement that as families had forgiven the soldiers (not criminals nor terrorists nor perpetrators nor heroes either) who were acting under orders from their commander (Sukarno-who else?), so will Singapore, who will no longer pursue this issue of the naming of the ship/s (but quietly conveying across that the vessel/s will not be welcomed on our shores). Thus... 1) Indo get to show their magnanimity (clap, clap), just as LKY did. 2) Indo Naval bossman gets a medal for healing/fostering/maintaining/reinforcing the strong relationship between the peoples of the two countries (more clap, claps). 3) Indo gets to name ship with no seeming objections-even more claps on their shores (so what if we objected anyway?) 4) We get 100+ room-nights of hotel booking. 5) If lucky enough, granite, sand and gas supply too. 6) Affected families/persons gets closure. 7) President gets a work out. 8) Schooling kiddos will get a history lesson (forgive but not forget). 9) All parties hopefully kiss and make up. Of course, above is just my conjecture...whether the 2 hands wish to clap is anybody's guess. Probably wishful thinking...but as GCT said once, its just simpleton thinking out of the discarded carton box from the demented mind of an old man high on kopi-O. Anyway the older Bush was quite a character as he was an ex-navy pilot during WWII and he also served as a CIA director. He was instrumental in the first Gulf war in chasing Sadam's forces out of Kuwait. Some lamented that he should have went all the way to overrun Iraq then but the coalition forces would have disintegrated as many deemed liberating Kuwait was the primary and only objective.

Vulcann 6th Gear February 12, 2014 Share February 12, 2014 Well here goes... Singapore faces threat of early, prolonged haze POSTED: 12 Feb 2014 09:45 Singapore is facing an early and prolonged bout of haze, with Environment and Water Resources Minister Vivian Balakrishnan and a pulp and paper giant both warning of an increase in burning in Indonesia. File photo: A cyclist rides along the pier in front of buildings blanketed by haze in Singapore on 19 June 2013. (AFP/Roslan Rahman) SINGAPORE: Singapore is facing an early and prolonged bout of haze, with Environment and Water Resources Minister Vivian Balakrishnan and a pulp and paper giant both warning of an increase in burning in Indonesia. In a Facebook post Tuesday night, Dr Balakrishnan said: “Again. Hot spots increasing dramatically in Sumatra, with 458 visible today. Haze may worsen when the winds weaken next week. Some rain expected, but not enough to douse the fires. “We will try to encourage them to take action — but we all know the welfare of close neighbours is not their priority. Hard truths of regional politics,” he added. The minister’s comments came on the same day Asia Pacific Resources International Limited (APRIL), which has extensive plantations and operations in the Riau province of Sumatra in Indonesia, warned of a prolonged haze season, citing the early start of burning season. The company, Asia’s second-largest pulp and paper maker, reported 55 fires near its plantations in the first five weeks of this year. According to the National Environment Agency (NEA) website, there were 458 hotspots detected on Tuesday, with 246 in the Riau province. This was more than double the 187 detected on Monday. Although the likelihood of transboundary haze affecting Singapore this week remains low because prevailing northeasterly winds are expected to remain for these two weeks, NEA said Singapore may experience “occasional slight haze due to the accumulation of particulate matter under stable atmospheric conditions”. As at 9pm on Tuesday, Singapore’s three-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reading was 38 — within the “good” air quality range. On Tuesday, APRIL said that with Sumatra seeing little rain since last month, burning — the cheapest way to clear land for agriculture — has started early this year. Its head of technical services in Riau MP Periasamy said: “All it takes is five days (without) rain for the land to dry out and the temptation rises in the community to set fires.” The dry season in Indonesia typically lasts from June to October, but dry weather has been forecast until mid-March. More than 320 hectares of forests near APRIL’s plantations have been burnt and 15 hectares of its plantations have been damaged by fires that spread from neighbouring forests, said the Singapore-headquartered company, which has 350,000 hectares of concessions in Riau. APRIL, which dispatches crews to each location identified from space as a hot spot, said only a small number of hot spots detected from daily satellite images are actual fires. However, the current fire danger is at its highest level in nearly 70 per cent of its plantations, and the company has placed its firefighting management staff on 24-hour standby. Singapore experienced its worst bout of haze in June last year, with the PSI hitting a record high of 401 at one point. The Haze Monitoring System for five countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, including Singapore and Indonesia, has made little headway since its adoption at last October’s ASEAN Summit. Law and Foreign Affairs Minister K Shanmugam noted “a lack of movement” on the system last month at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat in Bagan, Myanmar. -TODAY/xq (source: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/singapore-faces-threat-of/994338.html )

He was the only one ever called an intellectual and thinker. Also quite respected internationally. Didn't get him very far did it? One might even cynically say he was "locked" in mfa so he won't threaten anyone domestically. ↡ Advertisement
