Do You Want To Retire Before 60 ?

We used to retire at 55. Some countries still do that. People were generally happy. At 55, we start to do stuff that we never had time to do.

Now? A bit difficult. Why?

1) Government killed the kampong spirit living conditions with more privacy, neighbours hardly know one another anymore.

2) Government raised CPF withdrawal age n retirement age so no more kopi kakis who're 55. Everyone's working till 65. No one to talk to.

3) Children follow spend money trend, buy house n move out, employ maids move in, pay child care, etc. This depletes savings n postpone retirement. Retire only see maid. Want to take care of grandchildren also difficult. Don't work also cannot.

4) Wives also go out to work, so retire at 55 also no one at home.

5) Inflation makes things worse. Savings shrink by 30-40% now really gotta work. Scared not enough if fall sick.

6) Government doesn't want social costs so say everyone need to work to 70 now... even sell the reskilling koyok. They say it's to make us more productive. Actually it's to reduce social costs. Poor Singaporeans got no life, gotta work till give back IC, so bluff ourselves by going tours to get breaks.

This not a good trend.

Medical fees high, actually solution here is control how much doctors n surgeons charge Singaporeans rather than let market determine prices. Why are we helping to pay doctors n surgeons condo n landed properties?

Another one speaking the simple truth and reality of today.

However, there is a cost for advancement and development and for Singapore to be what it is today.  And there is no going back, we must realise

I believe that whoever governs needs to fully understand that chasing advancement always comes with consequences. Some consequences are greater than others and can "kill" the country.    Born and bred Singaporeans are headed towards extinction, if we continue like this, make no mistakes.

I believe that within the next decade or so we will be no more than 50% of the population.  As it stands, we are barely 60%.

Haiz..........

Many are also living beyond their means which hinder their retirement. Things may be more expensive  but instead of going for cheaper alternatives,  they take up more more loan to buy the now more expensive stuff, cannot lose face. Credit bureau can attest to that. Singapore lang face value number one🤣

Yes, and to that, many people hv mostly themselves to blame.
in our generation and the generation before us, there were less distractions and people were simply more down to earth.
values were conservative but yet forgiving and respect was given until broken.

Not anymore today.
This is also why i dont sympathize or empathize with people who mess up due to their own poor mindset and mismanagement of their situation.

I would dare say, majority are living beyond their means which ultimately prevents their retirement as you say. And majority (not all) will then say that they dont want to retire to save face.   Over time, that becomes seen as the norm, just like everything else.

At the end of the day, its their lives and its our lives, so we go our own way.

thats definitely Malaysia knowledge, exhibited by Stary.....

err...... actually my impression on stabbing and knives incidents are based on recent local knowledge.

https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/knife-crime-st-josephs-church-stabbing-mha-police-4841891

"There were 129 cases of murder, attempted murder, robbery, rioting and serious hurt involving knives from January to November 2024".

"Between 2021 and 2023, there was an average of 133 cases a year."

The biggest barrier to early retirement imo, is the consumption habit of the masses.  Capitalism and consumerism has induced people over the  decades  to buy and own beyond their means.  They want  the biggest house, the biggest car, and best reno, the best appliances, etc....and  there is  always  loan available if one cannot afford it.   If one is drowned in debt, it is impossible to be able to retire early  under normal circumstances.

Question is are they willing to make those sacrifices by living moderately, save &  invest prudently  or prefer to  be drowned in debt so that they can  own the shiniest things?   Ultimately this is a personal choice and depends on their own intrinsic motivation .  Just don't blame the policies/inflation/economy, etc if the choice is to take those loans.

The world economy is built on consumption and basically as "animals", there is  herd instinct that drives behaviour. Not many can pull themselves out of it and look at the world in another perspective.

Those retirees here probably know of peers that is of equivalent or maybe better financial status put still on the rat wheel churning more 💰 💰 💰 💰 cos there is always another level of wants......

Downgrade, pocket the profit and spend it during retirement.

Logical but emotionally hard. Most even want to leave their flats to the next gen and not re-mortgage back to HDB despite not having enough to pay for their own expenses and medical.
