Good for you sir. They should make NS voluntary so every soldier will be like you and not like me.

I too learned plenty in NS but its plenty of useless stuff that doesn't add value to my life. The parts that added value, I'm sure I would have learned more if I had 2.5 years outside of a prison.

I'm sure if you wait outside changi prison and interview those prisoners being released, they too can tell you that they learned plenty in prison.

And the ft say they come here, study, work, learn to live on their own, also can pick up a lot of useful life skills, teamwork, independence, etc. Boys to men, without the hassling and shouted at and ippt :D What say you?

And they get a degree by the age of the early twenties. Some already either have a few years working experience or have started a business.

Singaporean males all lose out in the job market and business world by the time they stop serving.

and the cycle continues, for the last few years. But at least we build a nation.

In fact, if you take a snapshot of the landscape, how many locals are in the top position of international enterprises?

And please, lets not discuss till this get locked. SO be mindful and only provide real insights.

My top 3 insights how we do a disservice to ourselves?

1. We have to go into a situation of making a Jobsbank website in order to be treated fairly for job application.

2. The changes to the work and glass ceiling from a insider view is very obvious on the top jobs and the replacement role being filled.

3. We have MOM monitoring company and flagging them for hiring non local, not because they are cheaper, but because they prefer non local and not sticking to the hiring rules.

I always ask this strange question. Why would a non local with IT be over over a local.?

Well, the response always came out with .

1. Attitude

2. qualification

3. experience

While I sort of guess its a textbook reply, its like saying Singapore Airline has the best stringent way of recruiting stewardess and they are so lucky.

Always lean and pretty. Plus smart.

You have to be pretty stupid to think that there is no unbiased screening. Show me one fat and ugly stewardess on board the SQ plane, and I will gladly be label blind and ignorant.

In a way, I feel more could be done to integrate the new citizen and welcome them on board, rather then splitting them into them and us.

I still feel that the melting pot of racial harmony and peaceful co existence is what make this place great to live and bring up our children.

Many locals do offer these. But when their own home ground is invaded and made unlevelled against them despite having these, then how do you expect them to stay quiet? New citizens who come to a new land are expected to show their commitment and desire to integrate. This is what they should as guests to a new country. The consistent message driven that Singaporeans should welcome the new citizens without appealing for reciprocation from the new citizens is simply a slap on the face for those who already have vested interest in this land.

Yes, every country needs influx of new capable people to satisfy a bigger picture of demographics. Yes, we need to absorb them with politically correct numbers to ensure it does not cause imbalance to the existing population.

Yes, a welcoming hand should be extended to the new citizens.

Yes, the existing new citizens should show their commitment and resolve to join their adopted home.

For many people now, not Mandarin as first language, but Singlish as first language. Grammar or phrases that have nothing equivalent in standard Mandarin. [laugh] [laugh]

These people who refuse to learn how to speak properly end up losing their competitive edge in the global platform. And they also end up surrendering their places to the so called FT and new citizens who can communicate effectively.

Indeed, 2 years is a lot of time.

So my suggestion is to make full use of that 2 years to ingratiate yourself. Walk out of the military with some dignity and use that 2 years as a form of profile enhancement. It helped contribute partly to me securing all the jobs I got hired. It is all about how you portray yourself.

Just to be safe.

When we use the word FT, let be clear that we are not referring to foreigned worker like food server and bus driver.

F-Talent are those in the different employment pass category.

FT refers to foreign talent, regardless of category. FT is the direct human resource competition against the local human resource talent pool. They may be competing in a different industry or different level with different needs and repercussion, but nonetheless, competitors, they are. Competition is good as it helps to increase the locals' sense of urgency to improve, no such thing as an ownself check ownself system that works, lack of accountability will lead to complacency and reduction of quality and innovation. but unfair competition is not good as it leads to social and related problems.

Am glad that now they have this initiative to get enlistees to "select" their desired vocation in NS. It will increase the role matching and results in better efficiency and use of resources.

Yes I totally agree to this. On top of that, The SAF should get external trainers and add on training for the NSF to stay as relevant to the market as possible. Some trainings and skills used in the civilian sectors are useful also in the military.

It is not scared or not scared. The training is tough but it is just training and it will be over at the end of the training - whether Israel or Chinese, Indian, Malay, nowadays I hear also got Masaleh. Most of us made it out alive, but I've also personally known people who died during NS, many others had permanent injuries. It is a contribution of our time and effort with the risks of possible death or injury. It is a sacrifice we make, yes. Do your part but it is not boy scouts, so understand the risks and be a thinking soldier.

The old SBC TV series depicted it quite well, boys train into men, but accidents happen and the newly wed captain died from the exploding grenade. The Jack Neo movies seem to downplay it by making them more comedy.

The current Channel 8 drama at 9pm makes me squirm...portrays NS as a happy blissful thing with beautiful wifey waiting lovingly for you at home after you serve reservist...etc...haiz such BS propaganda...typical...
