Now I drive to JB also very wary of my surroundings. Doors always kept locked and when parked had to use additional locking mechanisms.

 

So I try not to drive over unless necessary...haiz.

To each his own on whatever system preferred. There are too many scenarios for Murphy that no system in the world can cover all. Just drive safe to the best of our ability. If it's your time, it's your time.

 

The locking mechanism takes less than 10 seconds to engage. In my opinion, a 10 second calculated risk I'm willing to take. I would not be driving over at all if I had a choice.

 

Simple bang claim insurance I already sian half already. So cumbersome. Not to mention whole car lost...in foreign land somemore. The thought of it also sian half.

 

 

So many Singaporean cars in JB? Yes, a lot daily. How many got stolen and not reported in the news? Also many. Just pray that we don't add to that statistics as much as we an help it.

This kind of auto-lock or not is really depends on your perspective... hahaha... my father's Fluence has auto-lock, but all passengers can just pull the door lever and unlock from inside - you can open the door from outside. But if the dash unlock button is pressed, you can open the door from outside. Apparently, the SE says this is the Euro safety standard with the door unlock button on the dash so that if the driver is incapacitated, anyone can reach for it to unlock the doors.

 

My Sonata is a hydrid. It also has auto-lock - selectable to lock at above 20 kmh or shifting the gear lever. Front passengers can also open the door from inside but the rear passengers can't. The door unlock button is on the driver's door handle. Which also means if the driver is incapacitated, then someone needs the presence of mind to unlock the doors.

 

My previous Impreza has this issue of not having an auto-lock feature. I thought it was cos my car was the basic car, I didn't know that even in the premium Forester XT also don't have? What about the Legacy? My understanding is that the Legacy is the flagship and has lots of features the other models don't have. Not sure if this is still like that now.

 

I like the fact that many of the Sonata's default settings are tweakable, ranging from auto-luck, to one touch lane changer flashes. US-made Legacies can also tweak one touch lane changer settings, but MI claims they tried to change mine (I requested), and couldn't, so I suppose we have different car firmware here. You say your Sonata rear doors can't be opened from the inside once locked. This isn't because the child lock option's enabled?

There's too much conflicting information out there about whether or not auto-locking helps or hinders crash (as distinct from theft) safety, with some people saying that the danger of being locked in post-crash is real, while others declare it an old myth. I have yet to find conclusive studies or official recommendations that settle the matter. So, I say it's up to you. Personally, I hate the idea of someone having to break glass windows (glass!) to get to me and my children. No thanks hor. I also find it incredibly inconvenient to have to unlock doors to pick up passengers, especially when the pick-up needs to be chop chop. And lastly, a practical point is that my Legacy's dealer-modded ($150 from MI) auto-fold side mirror mechanism activates whenever all doors are locked - regardless of whether or not you're in the car driving at the time. So I, and any other Subaru (or Nissan; TCI owns both dealerships) owner who has this not-so-smart folding system installed simply can't have auto-lock anymore, even if we suddenly get the option to install it.

 

Which brings me to your question about the Legacy. It's still positioned as Subaru's premium sedan, but it's actually one of the cheaper Subarus now in terms of price, and no longer has the best specs in every area. For example, FXT has seat memory, while the Legacy doesn't, even though Subaru offers it as an option from the factory. And I believe the Outback (essentially the SUV version of the Legacy) comes with a lot of accessories (mud guards, etc) that are actually available for the Legacy, but don't come with it. The Legacy still has the most rear legroom among Subarus, and does have the STI/JDM bodykit option, but that's about it.

Me neither. Always risks introducing creaks and vibration when before there were none. Plus there's the danger of being poisoned... panels open already, so might as well add soundproofing, upgrade speaker cables, hey, might as well upgrade the speakers too. Downright hazardous.

About 10 years ago, my fren crashed his BMW.  He told me the car very clever.  Immediately after the crash, airbag comes out, engine off, hazard light off and door unlock.  He just open door and walk out of the car.

I've heard about this sort of thing with contis, but didn't realise they were around 10 years ago. Shows I'm mountain turtle.

 

Never heard about similar features (auto-unlock in crash, etc) in Asian cars though.

European safety door specs: Unless child lock is on, you simply can open the door from the inside of the car regardless whether the door is locked or not. You can try with VW, Audi, BMW and Merc. For BMW and Merc, passengers (not driver) do NOT even has an option to UNLOCK their doors, but they can still exit anytime they want.

2 cars ago, my 2003 Daihatsu YRV also had this feature.  Doors will auto unlock upon impact detected and airbag deployment, it was stated in the owner's manual, but I did not and did not want to test it out for myself

Although TCI sells it to its Subaru and Nissan customers and installs it, it's still an aftermarket mod, with non-Subaru parts that weren't designed to talk to the rest of the car. And if it were smarter, it might also cost more. I'm perfectly happy with it.

u should try locking from inside while the engine is on...
