I can understand why you are so defensive over the A3, I can't blame you. You should also try to understand why people steer clear of the 7DSG dry clutch.

Time passes and things change - No, the transmission in A3 didn't change, the fact remains it is still problematic. The day I bought my VW Scirocco back in 2010, I was told by VCS the problem already resolved. It started in as early as when the 7DSG was first launched. Until now, they still say the same thing. It's the same with Audi in Singapore. They tried to do many things, some helped but only to a certain extent, by delaying the inevitable, doesn't mean problem is resolved.

I have always shared my VW experience with my Scirocco willingly in VW forums here in MCF. No regrets, enjoyable experience, nice drive.. doesn't mean I would like to dive head in into another car with 7DSG dry clutch.

I wish a problem free ownership experience with your Audi A3. I really do.

Friend, you can do whatever you want to justify your purchase of a4. But it is pure speculation on your part that the a4 gearbox is more reliable and the a3 gb will give issue.

And I really hope you don't jinx yourself by slating the a3 gb and then wishing a3 owners good luck.

Hello all! This is my second post (and a super long one) in MCF (First one was getting a PPS quote from Ace_GT). I have been following this thread for the past few months and I am posting this to clarify some questions and answers and our experience with PA.

First off, I want to thank Audi2016 and Carer for their reviews and feedback of their A4 B9 over the past few months.

I would also like to point out that its a family car. I am just a prodigal son spokesperson and chauffeur second driver.

1. Why did we select the A4 as our next car to replace our BMW E90 320i:

After looking at a few reviews, doing numerous test drives and prices of various cars in its class (A4, XE, 3 Series and C Class), we decided that the Audi A4 is the most practical, spacious (Especially the rear), the best looking interior (as well as being high tech) and has the most attractive price point.

This was our selection matrix (from most important to least important) and its based on our personal opinion only,
i) Price: A4 > XE > 3 series > C Class
ii) OMV (Based on various posts in Conti Talk): XE > C Class > A4 > 3 Series

iii) Practicality: A4 > 3 Series > C Class > XE

iv) Comfort: C Class > A4 > 3 Series > XE

v) Interior: A4 > C Class > XE > 3 Series

vi) Exterior: C Class > XE > A4 > 3 Series (A4 B9 looks similar to the B8 and F30 is outgoing model)

vii) Handling: XE > 3 Series > A4 > C Class

2. When did we order our Audi A4 1.4l  and how much did it cost:

We ordered on 30th of April, in Moonlight Blue with Virtual Cockpit, which cost us $157,499 ($149,999 + $7500) with an OMV of $34k and COE of $51k (Cat B). With alot of some hassle, we also did not pay any penalty for not taking their loan and trade-in of our 320i (Which we actually sold it to a 2nd hand dealer for $4K more than what PA offered).

3. What freebies did we get:

Not much, just their aftermarket korean front cam and welcome lights (front doors only, which is still apparently OOS and not installed in our A4 yet).

4. How did we manage to get one with the Virtual Cockpit:

Honestly, it was a stroke of luck, blessing and timing. Just like most of you who inquired about the VC, we were also disappointed that our SE told us that there was no A4 1.4L in VC and the event cars with VC were all sold (My CEO and I were overseas during that week of the promotion). But we were fortunate enough to speak to the manager, who is able to see all the A4s that was arriving in SG. To our surprise, there was only ONE A4 fitted with VC in Moonlight Blue and black interior (both of which we wanted) which was arriving on the 5th of May. Had we not gone for the VC, we will have to wait till late June for the next shipment to arrive as the other A4s in Moonlight Blue in the 5th May shipment were all sold.

As we were only eyeing at the A4 in Moonlight Blue, we did not know whether the A4s in other colours have any fitted with the VC.

5. Why does the Virtual Cockpit cost $7,500:

The 12" Virtual cockpit comes with the MMI Navigation Plus with MMI touch (Touchpad on the scroll wheel). This includes an 8" screen at the centre dashboard (as mentioned by Audi2016), built-in GPS and Audi connect (Wi-Fi hotspot, Google Earth and Google point-of-interest search).

Audi Connect also requires a Data SIM Card, which we had one useless nanoSIM card lying around that was part of a Singtel MIO plan.

Currently, the advantages of having a VC is multi tasking, where the MMI screen at the centre dashboard is used for Android Auto and the VC is used for GPS:

7. Aftermarket mods:

Agreed with everyone in this thread who commented that 16 inch wheels were too small. Immediately after collection, we went to Leong Seng and had our wheels changed to used 19-inch S5 Rims (New ones were too expensive) in Matt Black with new 245/35 R19 Good Year F1 Asymmetric 3 tyres.

Recommended by Audi2016 from his post a few months back, chrome exhaust, rear sills, chrome steering wheel trim, S-line skirts and front chrome grills (Centre, lower left and right) were installed at Continental Klasse (which you can see in their Facebook page).

This is going nowhere. A4 probably more reliable due to new wet clutch transmission is speculation. Yes it is, maybe. Time will tell. I'm not proclaiming it's going to be 100% problem free, it isn't.

A3 has problematic gearbox. This isn't speculation. You should know. It's a fact & it's still happening. As I said, not a matter of IF but WHEN. You think I'm slating A3 owners? Because you are overly defensive. I do not go to A3 thread to talk about the transmission because I know it's sensitive. I'm merely sharing here why I am not touching it with a ten foot pole. If you think of it as otherwise, I cannot help it. But you are the one trying to compare the A3 and A4 every other day and the transmission sticks out like a sore thumb.

Being on the receiving end of 2 MU failure, I don't wish others to experience the same. I still hope I am wrong and the A3 problem has been resolved. Have a good weekend buddy.

I tried to ask the reliability of the new A3 GB in the A3 thread but the question seems invisible. Lol

I have fren driving current A3 for 1 year past without issue. I seriously consider the chio and well built A3 few months ago but in the end i dun dare to take the risk myself.

I can see both of you are proud owners of A3 and A4. Sharing good info about your cars. Keep it up!

Thanks guys!

The VC can also be found in higher end cars like the TT, R8 V10, Huracan. [laugh]

Most likely Volkswagen may have a slightly different software program to operate their VC.

Please post photo of your car with the new rims!

Suppork!

I will upload soon. Rainy days aren't helping, need find nice shot first. :P.

My reverse cam finally arrived last week and installed today. Working as expected, yellow line follows steering wheel. Only thing is it does not use the full screen of MMI, and there is settings for sound volume on the right.

I've been reading this thread, all 37 pages of them and congratulations to the bros here for making the A4 decision. Audi makes great car, no doubt about it. I'm new here and would like to see what bros here think -

My current ride is 2013 A5 coupe and reading bro Audi2016 about dry DSG is a  bit concerning. I wonder if my 7 speed s-tronic is wet or dry type.

Now backside itchy after reading so many great online reviews on the A4 and the TT.

What I like about the A4 as many bros here mentioned is the interior, and the ride quality. I'm surprised how quite it is even on the 1.4. It rides better than my A5C which is tuned slightly on the sporty side but sometimes I just want to sit back for relaxing cruise. I've been waiting to see the pricing for the A4 2.0. I went for the audi driving experience and there's special promo for the 2.0 Quattro @$194. Not sure if it comes with VC but I'd assume it does at this price. The 2.0 has more power output than my A5C so the A4 should feel more responsive. They both have identical weight at about 1.5T. But my other half feels the exterior is a bit conservative - she prefers the more sporty look.

Another option we are considering is the TT coupe ($223 after 5K show disc). While I love the VC, I find the dashboard is bit too simple with the lack of central console. I'd prefer the A4 dash implementation with secondary console for apple play. Also the TT bootspace is too small for luggage when need to travel. We have no kids so coupe will do just fine. Design wise, the TT wins but I feel the A4 has better bang for the bucks.

I hope both A4 and TT are using the wet type gear box. I'm very afraid of GB problem. One of my fren beemer had issue and costed him 9K to fix - ouch...

Rumor has it that 2017 A5 will inherit the A4 like interior but knowing PA, they always price new model at premium and drop 10-20K when the rush is over. If 2017 for Europe, it means will land on our shore only in 2018...too far away, so it is either A4 or TT.

Being on the receiving end of 2 MU failure, I don't wish others to experience the same. I still hope I am wrong and the A3 problem has been resolved. Have a good weekend buddy.

Mercedes CLA and Volvo S60 also using dual clutch. Any reason why we dun hear issues ?

Based on what you have written so far, you have leaned so much to the A4 that its as good as you have just bought it yesterday. haha.... :XD:

The buyers for these two models are different group of people as they serves different purposes. I don't suppose a TT driver will want to use that car to pick up his in-laws  :a-happy:

As for the gearbox, it was mentioned by fellow friend (Audi2016) that its a wet clutch and hence it should supposedly much better than the notorious dry clutch gearbox.

Just get the ones that you feel happy to drive in it...  [nod]

If your A5 is the 2.0T with 200+ hp, it's probably using the higher capacity gearbox with wet clutch pack.

Only the 1.4TSI engines are sold with the smaller capacity 7 spd gearbox with the dry clutch pack.

The difference between A3 and A4 is one uses the transverse mounted gearbox (old one, dry clutch pack) and one uses the longitudinal mounted gearbox (new one, wet clutch pack).
