I still have it, but speaking about the family car.

  :a-m1212:

Dsg did have issue in past isn't it? Do those new ones (after 2013) still having the same problem like nothing has changed? How much longer do we harp on the past event like it is current?

btw: Those friends don't keep in touch? They didnt learn from each other not to buy dsg given the first hand bad experience?

Friends 1 and 2 are divorced.

Friend 3 doesn't know them. Different group.

I am not harping. Just stating my circumstances which lead me to stay away from the 7DSG

my friend sold off his polo few months ago, cos still break down more often than he expected. Last i checked, 2013 was about 2.5 years ago since this issue was supposed to be settled.

My brother in law's family 2 VW also in service center often.

I think don't need to talk too much lah.

All the above cars are not even into their 6-7th year.

i just went thru some vagsg thread - another on piston crack.

so i gathered following after following certain threads on some cars i've shortlisted prev -

- toyota altis aircon odour issue

- nissan qashqai rattling n sudden power lost issue

- mazda 3 shock noise issue

- honda vezel hybrid dct software issue

- honda airbag issue

- subaru issue?

- korean car issue other than wear & tear parts (not drivetrain) prev feedback by some not to last as long + overstated fc?

compare w vw jetta / golf / polo / touran / roc (wc i shortlised none) issue - mu / clutch / piston / timing chain issue.

mayb someone can add to my limited list of understanding of above car / brand issue.

Whenever there is a comment on vw dsg, you never fail to defence and brought up Honda/takada issue as comparison. The issue here is vw knowingly cheat. Kind of boring to argue on it and let the buyer decide what risk they wanna take.

As for me, my stand is clear.. Stay away from dual clutch as long as possible (not realible enough) and definitely over my dead body if you want me to get a dry dsg. And I don't deal with cheater as well. Period.

Merc A, B, CLA, GLA class ... all using 7 speed dual clutch possibly for FWD transverse mount engines.

C, E, S using 7Gtronic plus ... next will be 9Gtronic on new W223

Ford's Poweshift is 6 speed dual clutch

Volvo also using Ford's powershift, which is dual clutch... tho newer models are moving to 8 speed Aisin conventional auto transmission

Opel (GM group) also using dual clutch if i am not wrong

Alfa Romeo Giuletta / MiTo using twin clutch TCT

unless every manufacturer move to 7-8 speed conventional... or CVT

Two scenarios,

1) You cheated and you planned for it

2) You cheated but you do not know you have done it.

In my opinion, this is also an issue of integrity and/or ethics.

Like I said previously, we can't lumped every problem together to give a complete picture. Cars earlier than 2013 (whether rectified or not during recall) may have already sustained some corrosion damage and problems may only be showing up now. I know of 3 colleagues with newer VW/Audi (2 Golf, 1 A3 SB) and none of them have mentioned anything about GB issue.

Some posts here contains so much FUD that they sounded like 100% of dsg are guaranteed to fail (yours included :p ).

Remember also reading in altis forum about gearbox failure in a new altis in the first month.

From what i have read piston crack was an issue in the old generation 1.4 twin-turbo TSI engine. The new generation engine is single turbo with timing belt (not chain). Are you mixing up all the timelines??

i'm afraid not cos that ride was 10k km within 1yr age. u may wish to read up the thread in vagsg.

timeline anot, there's no concrete official news / evidence by vw. even there is, i'll still choose to avoid.

in this era of globalization n competitive (read: cheaper) labor / subcontracting, there is no doubt that quality n reliability will suffer, from gadgets to cars to properties.

@zerobim08 just 1 question.

Are you defending your ricebowl, or are you simply defending the stand that we are taking?

I am not affiliated with VW group in any way if that's what you want to pry. [:p]

I am just putting out plausible/defensible reasonings/facts about dsg in contrast to those FUDs about the dsg being spread in here.

further, any idea the reason to reduce to single turbo instead of twin charge? it would lead me to think otherwise, until i'm convinced. still, the drivetrain issue of vw will put me off it indefinitely, regardless of its build, performance, fuel efficiency & handling.

Not prying anything. Asking because it seems only you are defending this so vehemently.

What I read from another mcfer reg the twin charge 1.4.

-   <3.5k rpm it uses a super charger.

-   >3.5k rpm, the super charger stops & turbo takes over.

-   trouble occurs when at >3.5k, the super charger does not stop & instead continues to blow together with the turbo charger.  The engine cannot tahan the 'mega boost' & .... [dead]

Why drivetrain issue will put you off? [:p]

I would think that the reduction of the twincharger setup to a turbocharger setup for the latest generations of VW models is largely due to cost. That is just purely my speculation.

Let's put it this way. I bet there are many other forums dedicated to other brands where you will also find many posted issues. You know what I am getting at...

But what is the true picture? Most probably nobody really knows. The only indication we can get is from those reputable reliability ranking surveys. We do know VW is ranked way below average. Even then, the percentage of cars with reported problems compared to the top ranking makers is still at a very much acceptable risk/percent (and this figure is nowhere near the guaranteed failure some VW/dsg bashers in here seems to imply).

It is not always a lose-lose situation. For similar price you get a better performance, better FC and maybe safer and better built quality car. The trade-off is you take a higher reliability risk. For me, the this is acceptable as with all risk it is a just probability number (may or may not happen) but on the other hand I am 100% sure I can get all the advantages of that particular car.

Colleague sitting next to me, driving a post 2013 Golf 7 has a mechatronic unit failure last year. gb was replaced.

So has anything changed? Sometimes people harp on it for a reason.

Disclaimer: I don't love or hate vw. Just stating facts.

Maybe the better phrase is "dispelling all the dsg FUDs" [laugh] .
