You're right the 2GT is heavier than a Mazda 2 hence the significant diff in terms of the century sprint timing.

I should also say that, century sprint aside, how come a 1.5 turbocharged engine puts out so much lesser bhp than a 1.5 NA engine? I would expect the former to puts out at least around 130bhp is reasonable ya? Or this is a case where BMW 'over' detuned the 216i?

The 218i churns out 136hp from the same engine so it can be achieved but as to why the significant differences between different models I'm not sure.

I just don't get it, why is this BMW 216i's 1.5-litre turbocharged engine puts out 102bhp and 180Nm of torque only?

For the same cc, e.g. a Mazda 2 1.5 NA engine puts out 114bhp and sprints from 0-100km/h in 9.9 seconds!

I mean, badge aside, for the same CC engine, why is this turbocharged engine produces so much lesser bhp than a NA engine? Am I missing something?

And this new 216i is selling at $158,800!

The reason for the change is mainly related to emissions.

So in order to meet the emission standard, the engine must be throttled

As for the Mazda - it's much smaller and lighter..

You can't have it all..

Try a XC 60 for power, but it's a different cost and emission band..

Ok, now I'm curious to know how bad can it (emission band) get assuming if they didn't tone it down say for example from the original 130bhp and a more useful 220nm of torque? It should still be within the same emission band (125 < B <= 160), no?

In my opinion, I think this new 216i is a severely under-powered for a 7-seater. Maybe I'm wrong.

Take advantage of the low COE Category A price and own a BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer from just $139,800*.

With the low COE Category A price, there is no better time to drive home a 7-seater BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer. It is the car that makes everyday driving and family touring even more dynamic.

For family car, forget about hp.  It should be what's max torque at what RPM.

216 has 180NM from 1.25k RPM whereby 150NM from 4k RPM.

Which 1 has better useability in the city state?

By the way, both 216/218 is from 3 pot engine.  The same engine design is used in petrol & diesel.

Very underpowered...

I test drove it. It was ok, perky enough for me but not overly fantastic, and within my price range. I booked it and got $3999 COE rebate. Dumping my Honda HRV and getting my new ride on Friday.

216i Gran Tourer? What price bro?

When I booked, it was $158,800.  SE threw in additional $1k discount from financing and insurance company.

Then COE dropped to $36k.  My COE rebate was $40k.  So, nett price is $153,350.

Between this and 160k Honda CR-V? Thots

I actually went to Kah Motor and have a look at the CR-V, before I went to PML.  Well, CR-V is made in Thailand.  A more better comparison would be between CR-V and Harrier Turbo.
