Anyone visited there for holiday recently? Any recommended place for food and visit?

Visit Canal City's Ramen Stadium for excellent hakata ramen, more ramen at the yatai along the river (very jap - hardly any English menu), Parco at tenjenbashisuji shopping street, can even visit Best Denki main jeepun store...lol.

If going in Jul, can catch the Hakata Gion Yamakasa. Other than that, nothing much to see at Fukuoka. City quite spread out, attractions not as well served as Tokyo.

I was there enroute to Hiroshima. Only an hour shinkansen away. Can visit Mazda factory while in Hiroshima

I was there in Dec 2023... the city itself isn't really very attractive... I used it as a base to visit all the interesting attractions outside of Fukuoka City... most are less than 2 hours away by Shinkansen or local trains...

1. I did the river punting at Yanagawa. Quite an interesting experience. Eat the broiled eel. I was too late in winter to try but it's supposed to be very good.

2. I visited Mount Aso. Really very nice! It's an active volcano so you have to check the website to see if the site is open or not. The volcano is the main attraction but I feel the Kusanseri Grasslands below are equally attractive. Lots of nice yellow grass to walk on. There are wild horses running around... my kids loved running around. Pity that in winter there were limited number of buses returning to Fukuoka so we couldn't stay long as we wanted. There's also a volcano museum. Didn't visit cos not enough time.

3. We then visit Kumamoto Castle. Very lovely. Nice walk around and going up. I tried the breaded fried pork rice at a restaurant recommended by one of the bros here... the food was really outstanding... still is one of the standout meals in my month long tour of Japan.

4. We finally visited the 7 Hells of Beppu. Really quite interesting. Get ready for a bit of walking from site to site. This one no rush, take your time.

All the above one day each. Slow and steady.

I only missed a few things - the Kyushu Ceramic Museum in Arita (this was the one thing I regret missing), the amusement park in Sasebo (not sure my kids would be allowed go or not), and going all the way down south to Kagoshima (although nothing really attractive)...

If you drive and if you're going in summer, it would be much easier to visit all the above...

I stayed near Hakata Station... about 15 min walk from the station to my apartment... honestly, the city is just another city lor... heh heh... I didn't go to the yatai at the river cos not so suitable for little kids...

I saw the video yest. There was another comment by another singaporean married to jap husband, who said that kyushu tends to have a lot of typhoon and rain during typhoon season. for 3 months.
So she's not going to stay in kyushu again when she returns when her kids are older.

Exactly... honestly, I find most Japanese cities a bit boring... the attractions as day trips outside the cities are the things to go for... the problem is that these attractions are kind of set up for the Japanese style of doing 1-3 day trips to stay at the attractions rather than for tourists who use a base to travel... this results in significant travelling time and distance from the major city bases...

I did a day trip to Nagasaki (from Fukuoka) to visit the Atomic Bomb Museum. Wanted to show my kids the horrors of war.
I had visited the Hiroshima memorial before.
While sombre, the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum potrayed how the people of Nagasaki (likewise the Hiroshima memorial) suffered due to the atomic bomb. They don't mention anything about the suffering the Japanese inflicted on others.
Nagasaki is still a nice small city to visit.

Yeah I decided between Hiroshima versus Nagasaki... in the end Hiroshima won out cos it was my next base... not sure if there is any substantial difference but the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and Atom Bomb Museum was very well done... even my kids at 3 & 5 years old were able to pay attention over the 1.5 hours we spent walking around... of course I did a lot of pointing and talking to get them to notice things... the paintings particularly caught their attention...

Good choice.
The Hiroshima Memorial is bigger, better organised and more informative.

I actually prefer the Nagasaki experience.  Smaller but more intense, more raw.

Both museums talked about Japanese invasion of other countries but went pretty light on the suffering and killing done by the Japanese imperial army,  Japan played the victim card here.

But it is still a moving experience. The horror of the bomb.

I won't say play the victim card... the focus is really non-nuclear proliferation agenda... the focus is not really the outcome of the world war per say though it's in the background...

Definitely not bro... and yes I definitely agree that compared to Germany, the Japanese really aren't at the same level of remorse and contrition for the unnecessary suffering caused by their aggression... but it's what it is...

The experience is nevertheless moving and confronting on the horror of the nuclear bomb.

It would have been perfect if... But it is what it is.

Digressing a little from the topic of Fukuoka, with a small bit of history.

Nagasaki was unfortunate to be bombed. They were actually the 4th target on the list.

Hiroshima - 1st target, was first to be bombed
Kokura - 2nd target, was designated to be bombed second but cloud cover caused the pilot to divert to Nagasaki
Kyoto - 3rd target, was persuaded to be removed from the list by the then US War Secretary due to its cultural importance
Nagasaki - 4th target, unfortunate to be moved up the list when Kokura and Kyoto were bypassed
