I also dont think people would for no rhyme or reason simply walk past a kid in public and pat the head.   confirm minority

So specific to this case, old man was in his space, his territory, his coffeeshop, the place he spent more than half his life in.  It's a welcoming gesture to a young patron.

as mentioned,  no reason to turn it into anything vile and start letting imagination fly.  

As for your son, he for sure, as both you and I know, will be facing many and much more distressing experiences in Life.   

So do advise him to brush such a small matter off......

Lust time, when i was in Italy and France for work exchange the female counter part greet with side cheek touch and hug. If do it here, you will get slap in the face and probably got free meal at Changi.
