One possibility is that  the flammable gas was built up in the fairly concealed room, some spark or heat must have caused the flammable gas to burn and caused the air to expand quickly.

most like burnt in perfect stoichiometric air/fuel ratio

that is why the walls are so clean, no trace of carbon soot
