Yes, most will not be able to do it, but it is actually not as impossible as one would think. 

3 ingredients are needed to be able to retire in mid-forties.  1)  A relentless goal on retirement since the day started working. For that goal, what does one  willing to trade-off? 2) Financial methodology. These are ways of making income and financial  planning/investing knowledge  and 3) Financial psychology. This  is about  the required mindset in keeping/preserving money and how one views money and life.

From my own experience, it is (3) that is hindering most from retirement, regardless early or later.  (2) can be learned from many sources, but for (3), almost no one talks about it. There is a lack of awareness in this space.  It is like nobody wants  to talk about dieting as they prefer to talk about slimming products when comes to the topic of losing weight.
