Actually the other day .. I think I over oiled the K&N and the oil actually dripped out of the air filter box onto the floor !!! Red oily patch !

Solution for your ciggy butts/leaves/dead bird [sly] problem - place a wire mesh over the opening.

If you look within the airbox properly, there are a few holes for water runoff. Water from the rain should not pose a problem. Unless you start to scoop in flood water! [sweatdrop]

Too much oil is no good. Some may got sucked in and dirty your air flow sensor. When I wash the thing, I let it stand to dry for 1 day, oil it, and let it stand for another 2-3 days so that excess oil can drain off. Rest it on tissue/toilet paper.

In the meantime I drive ard with the stock filter.

You only need to wash it after 60K. Tried washing at 20K once. That thing's still very clean. It's suppose to filter even better once it gets dirty.

Nope, a new gauze filter has bigger holes so filter efficiency may be lower compared to the paper filter. However, once it gets a bit dirty, the dirt helps to 'plug' the bigger holes, this making it a better filter.

There is a limit of dirt collected before flow will be significantly affected. Maybe you can check out K&N's website on the technical details. Ultimately it's most impt function is still filtering.
