Saaber Neutral Newbie August 9, 2003 Share August 9, 2003 That's still pretty hot...mine is almost similar to ambient temp which is the low 30 on the move in the day and only move to the high 30 and occasional 40 when stationary at the traffic light for abt 5 mins but once moving, the temp will drop preety fast.... My CAI is drawing air with a 3 inch mouth right at the bumper area leading to 3 inch flexible pipe and then tapering down to 2 inch for the venturi effect where the fog loight is suppose to be... Madarmour Neutral Newbie August 10, 2003 Share August 10, 2003 Agree with you.... especially when we are in to various incremental mods, hardcore or otherwise... interesting to know what incremental gains we get That's right!
Madarmour Neutral Newbie August 10, 2003 Share August 10, 2003 Hi Doc, I know I'm not supposed to do this during time like this :-P But, with the limited time on hand, I make do with my spoilt LCD which can only shows the first and last digit (i.e. 37.1 will only appear as 3x.1). Anyway, I had shifted the probe into where the actions are ... i.e. the air filter element area !!! Wow .. am now able to monitor the temperature more "accurately" despite the missing digit. Temperature seems to hover at high 30 - low 40. I can't get the exact number (again due to the missing digit), but it jump from 3x to 4x .. so I assume it's 38degC - 42degC range. Traffic light is worst .. it goes into 40+. Moving off doesn't drop ... but once I hit reasonable speed (in fact the faster the cooler !!!) I get 3xdegC! I guess it's high 3xdegC coz once I hit the brake, 4xdegC shows up ! But on highway, 3xdegC is consistent with occassional 4x .. again .. I believe it's 38-42degC. Only time it goes into 5x is when I idle for 5-10min to pick up something .. but immediately after moving off, it's 4x again. So .. point to prove is that the CAI works .. BTW, I also insulate the air box with 9mm Armaflex foam. However, last point to ponder .. why was my resonator so hot at 50+degC !!! Believe me, the temp meter is not damped and it can jump more than 5 degrees at an instant! You should really get a new display. Anyway, don't you think 38 degrees at the intake is pretty high? Especially for all the troubles you have gone through. 40+ degrees when you stop means that the hot air blown by the fan still managed to get in. Mine records a temp of 45 - 46 degrees when stopped with aircon on.
Andrewkb Neutral Newbie August 10, 2003 Author Share August 10, 2003 OK .. will get a new display .. as for the intake of hot air .. my system is still not optimum. ... if you recall the previous schematic diagram ... I'm now sucking 1/4 hot air, 3/4 cold air on the move and mainly hot air while stationary.
Andrewkb Neutral Newbie August 10, 2003 Author Share August 10, 2003 How do U do the tapering ?
Madarmour Neutral Newbie August 10, 2003 Share August 10, 2003 >>now sucking 1/4 hot air, 3/4 cold air on the move and mainly hot air while stationary. You'd better seal off the 25% part within the engine compartment then. Or place the whole opening out. Or use an oval opening.
Madarmour Neutral Newbie August 10, 2003 Share August 10, 2003 I think you can ovalise the pvc pipe by heating it and press it
Andrewkb Neutral Newbie August 10, 2003 Author Share August 10, 2003 Huh ? Oval opening ? As for placing the whole opening outside ... probably gotta wait till the baby settle down ... am only now stealing some time to spare for car .. more like observations ...
Madarmour Neutral Newbie August 10, 2003 Share August 10, 2003 Once you ovalised the opening, you can put the whole opening outside, without fear of scraping the ground. Plus you get to use all the available opening volume.

Just for comparison, where did you mount/placed the thermometer probe ? I realised if it is in the air filter box, it is hotter than at the intake mouth... Jacko Neutral Newbie August 11, 2003 Share August 11, 2003 Hi, After reading you guys diy the thermometer probe, I did the same thing on my air box. I place the probe just before the throttle body where air is channel into. Is it the right place? Wow, my temp is like see-saw. Morning start off at 30 - 35 degree; if stop at traffic light will go up to 38 but come back down to 33 when move off. Afternoon is most drastic! Temp stay around 40-45 in city drive, but once off engine for 20-30min and come back to the car again, is sometime hit 60 degree!! Temp went down to 40+ once move off again. Seem like you guys have a cooler engine compared to mine. By the way, Are you SilverStream in SWOG?
S2P2 Neutral Newbie August 11, 2003 Share August 11, 2003 i think it should be hotter.....the box is enclosed mah....how's being daddy
Andrewkb Neutral Newbie August 11, 2003 Author Share August 11, 2003 Throttlebody is the most accurate ... since it's just before it enters the engine. However, I didn't place it there, coz it's too near the Throttlebody ... dun want any air leakage there ... U might wanna consider the ThrottleBody coolant bypass. Yeah, SilverStream, and you are ? Andrewkb Neutral Newbie August 11, 2003 Author Share August 11, 2003 (edited) I think best will be at the stock temperature sensor. But I wanna know Saaber put outside or inside .. if inside and able to get low 30+degC .. then I AM IMPRESSED ! Well .. being dad the 2nd time ... this boy need observation, so still in hospital nursery, visit him twice a day. Andrewkb Neutral Newbie August 11, 2003 Author Share August 11, 2003 BTW, I had spent significant amount of investment to bring my engine temperature down ! New low temp thermostat, low temp fanswitch, 1.3bar radiator cap and Water Wetter. Also thermal paint+warp my exhaust manifold !!! However, it only help to get it down to 80degC .. prev was 101degC !!!!
Jacko Neutral Newbie August 11, 2003 Share August 11, 2003 I'm thinking of doing the coolant bypass, but need to remove the whole airbox. Seem like this weekend project then. Did you did the coolant bypass? How the effect? My nick is the same in SWOG, Jacko. Going down to meetup tonite? I guess not with your new born, congrats man!! ↡ Advertisement
