I was using Castrol SLX 0W-30 before my 20000km servicing...after my servicing and changing to Shell Helix Ultra 0W-40...I am getting lousy fuel consumption...I guess it's the visc of the oil....thinner the oil, better the fuel consumption...

coming back to my question, can anybody help?? [confused]

Thicker the oil up to about 40 for newer cars, better the protection! Petrol is not very expensive. your drivetrain is.

Petrol is expensive here leh... [:p]

Ok la, maybe 0W-20 is a bit too thin.....But SLX 0W-30 is good...better fuel consumption and can feel the engine is less draggy during pick up...anybody got lobang for the oil or workshop that uses castrol?...thanks!

The "W" no. doesn't really matter since you won't see freezing temps in SG for the oil to reach that "W" viscocity, so in essence whenever you start your car even in a cold morning the oil visco is probably around 20.

A 10W-30 will do fine for a new car, the upper visco range is more applicable in a all summer climate.

Sorry, side-track a bit. What happens when there is too much engine oil in the engine, other than creating too high a pressure in there? I've waited for the oil to drain back into the sump already, i.e. engine is cold. unsure.gif

I'm not going back to Star Automotive at Portsdown already, this is the 3rd time they have overfilled my engine oil, and I've only been there 3 times! mad.gif

Wahaha I overfill all the time, even though I know its bad... I think I'm really bochup... cos i dun wanna store the old bottle too long so will use the old one to top up the next one...

The problem with this is that the next time the engine is run, the windage in the crankcase and other pressures generated by the oil pump, etc. place a great strain on the seal on the rear main bearing.

Eventually, often much sooner than the ordinary man in the street might expect, the rear main bearing seal ruptures, and the engine becomes a 'leaker'. If you've got a manual gearbox, this means one thing: this oil goes right onto the flywheel and the face of the clutch disc. A lubricated clutch is A Bad Thing.

If this still goes unnoticed, the front seal is the next to go, and the engine then becomes a 'gusher'. As well as smothering the clutch with oil from the rear, the oil now coming from the front leak will be neatly distributed about the engine bay as it hits the front pulley - often propelling it out as far as the brake discs. It's sort of like a Hollywood disaster movie in the making, yet people don't consider this.

Wahahaha... disaster ya? I dunno... mebbe I dun care also... [:p]

In the article, Chris mentioned if the level is "way above" the Max line. The question is how much is way above? For my case, between the Min to Max is about 2.5cm, but the oil level is about 6-7mm above the Max line. Is that "way above" confused.gif

Hi, wondering when is the best time to check the oil level ? [:|]

After warm up...say 10 mins or when engine is cold ? [gossip]

Thank you.

in addition to checking oil when cold, make sure u wipe the dip stick clean and then re-insert to check the actual oil level.

I made a mistake of not wiping it before checking and ended up with an almost dry oil sump.

didn't realise that the oil was leaking mah.

each time pull out to check and the level was acceptably high.

Next time must not be lazy.blush.gif
