Need to check with you guys, does your auto tranny gear shift up only when reach a specific speed or rpm regardless whether you are light or heavy footed?

Have been in the business of importing used air-con compressors, starters, alternators etc from Japanese scrapyeards in the late 80'. All use components are resold to recond shops in Spore Malaysia, Cambodia, Burma, Brunei etc. As far as I know ,all recond air con compressors are either from Spore or Malaysia NEVER have seem one from Japan.

I think in those countries, they have climate control systems. They wouldn't bother with a car with A/C because of the varying climes they get.

The auto box changes with the throttle position and sometimes with the RPM.. it does vary.. no specify RPM or position of gas padel though..

Great to know I was conned.. I got a used one.. it wasn't even recon.. the subsequent officially recon that I got thereafter(which was from another shop) worked like a charm.. Thanks for the info.. to know that I will not be chopped again! Next time I need a compressor, least I'll do is buy an "official recon" one.. not something that the installer got from the scrap yard!

Price quoted is abt $900. Is it reasonable?

 

Are you sure its only S$900? I got a re con auto tranny from KATC for S$3,120.

 

Re-con gear boxes are pretty safe as all the internal parts are changed. A brand new one, for my case, costs S$7,000.

Hi Looneytune, my ride is '92 Civic...and this model end at 1996, assuming CAS get the 3yrs Jap imported gearbox...it would have been exported out in 1999 and it been 4 yrs since. Not sure if CAS will service the box first before installing?

 

And next to consider would be their workmanship.

When I was in KATC, I met a '92 Civic owner who had his auto tranny changed to a re-con one for S$2,000.

 

So S$900 is dirt cheap.

Hi...was told by CAS mech that the gearbox is imported from Japan that has been used for 3 yrs then the car was scrapped (Is this the norm in Japan?). And not from our S'pore scrap yard. How to check?

 

How is CAS workmanship? Any comments.

Tru my past experience with my AT171, had a delay to engage the reverse gear with my autobox.

 

Got several quotes for abt $1.2K to fix problem but to re-build the autobox is $2.2K.

 

I had the re-con done at KATC ( as I would never trust CAS due to their poor workmanship in the past).

 

Not too good a job but autobox is still OK after 1 year although had some teething problems immediately after getting it done.

 

I later checked with those scrapyards n they have 3 year old autoboxes from Japan ( with guarantee) for my car for only $300. Add another $100 n they will also install it for you.

 

I think I should have taken the cheaper option as a 3 year old auto box would still b in pretty good condition unless it's broken.

 

It's too late for me now, so I just hope n pray the re-con one dosen't breakdown soon.

 

If it does I would get the scrap yard to change it this time.

 

You must consider that repair n re-con work in SG sucks big time that's why we now have a BATA (Buy And Throw Away) mentality.

 

I've tried to have my VCR, washing machine, fridge etc repaired here B4 but the results were always disappointing.

 

I would always recommend a replacement to a repair if it's possible.

My car is a 15 yo AT 171 but the scrap yards still have autoboxes ( n other parts which are very new but fits my 15 yo car) for them which is about 3 yo only (selling for $400 incl installation) as it comes from some other model of toyota n not a AT171. I found this out too late as I just had my autobax re-coned at KATC for $2100.

 

If a workshop is selling a re-con autobox for $900, strong chance it is a scrapyard autobox but they don't tell you. They hope got no problem but if some serious defect comes B4 the 6 month warranty expires, they will try to repair or just change another one for you.

 

Their cost is only about $400 all in so they make a tidy profit of $500.

 

Be very careful what u are really getting.
